"Every triad, every conjunction of three forces, can give rise to another triad and under right conditions a chain of triads results. It is always from the Neutralizing Force – that is, the 3rd Force – that a new triad springs."

(Maurice Nicoll - "Commentaries," Vol.I, p.109)
"The moment of receiving an impression is the moment of becoming conscious. It is the act of seeing."

(Jeanne de Salzmann)
"…for it is only with the help of a third force that the first two can produce what may be called a phenomenon, no matter in what sphere."

(Gurdjieff in "In Search of the Miraculous" by P.D. Ouspensky)
...There is also the reminder of “economising experiences” and regulating the unwinding of the “springs” of the centres, so that energy is not wasted, to prevent premature old age and to prepare for “a happy old age.”

...
...Why might it be important for us to be aware of what these periods consist?

Regarding old age, pondering upon and preparing for its possibilities and constraints beforehand can help in their fulfilment and their working with at the time...
Drawing an outline of those timings, periods and events in human life that seem significant in Gurdjieff’s writings and talks, the following categories can first of all be envisaged:

Conception – birth – childhood – youth – maturity – old age – death ...
"...You know that this Work can only begin with those who have Magnetic Centre—i.e. who are convinced that there is something higher than themselves. How can you expect to reach anything higher in yourself if you do not believe that anything higher exists?"

(Maurice Nicoll - "Commentaries")
And at the same time by studying the world and the laws that govern the world he will learn and understand the laws that govern him."

(Gurdjieff in "In Search of the Miraculous" by P.D. Ouspensky, p.75)
"Man is an image of the world. He was created by the same laws which created the whole of the world. By knowing and understanding himself he will know and understand the whole world, all the laws that create and govern the world..."
"...The whole of this work is about a change of being—that is, a change of the level of being at which a man naturally is—in ordinary life."

(Maurice Nicoll)
"…It is useless to think that wars and horrors and revolutions, etc., are exceptional. What is at fault is the level of being of people..."
" '…the level of being of a man attracts his life'. This saying applies to humanity in general—that is, the general level of humanity with regard to its being attracts the form of life that it experiences…"
"I become truly conscious only when I open to all my possibilities, higher and lower."

(Jeanne de Salzmann)
It is striking that, as I understand it, the “divergence between the line of knowledge and the line of being,” and the subsequent lack of means to understanding, is said by Gurdjieff to be caused, among other things, by inexact language.

"...in moments of self-remembering and work on oneself. When a man sees both into himself and into the object, or sees himself and the other person simultaneously, then the results of this higher psychic activity form associations of their own class."

(Maurice Nicoll)
"...But if a man labours at learning something and uses his directed attention, then voluntarily formed associations are laid down in him.

"The third class of associations is formed, briefly speaking...
"Briefly speaking, all education is to lay down associations that are voluntarily formed, but these are not necessarily so formed. They may be partly laid down unconsciously—that is, involuntarily formed..."

(Gurdjieff speaking in "In Search of the Miraculous" by P.D. Ouspensky, p.68)
"…And the chief thing is that, owing to the…vagueness and inaccuracy [of ordinary thinking], every word can have thousands of different meanings according to the material the speaker has at his disposal and the complex of associations at work in him at the moment."
