I’m not sure what he is digging up here. The bird feeder above, out of the picture ,has sunflower seeds in it. Squirrels prefer sunflower seeds over cracked corn. They even eat crabapples! Of course, nuts are their absolute favorite!
Part of your backyard wildlife area should be a small sandy area. (My property is clay). Birds “take a bath” or dust themselves with sand dust just the same as other species take a bath in water.
Even a 3’ square of sand at the end of a child’s swing set slide would be appreciated by sparrows!
