The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

Guys. I just had a crazy idea. What if the President DIDN’T deploy troops in American cities. Just a thought. Have we tried that before?

I visited the apartment building ICE raided on Tuesday today. Story to come, but you can walk right in. Half of the apartments have no doors on them. Children's stuff abandoned in some flats. *Citizen* residents told me they were arrested and held for hours in zipties. This is America

this is wild: while Stephen Miller's guy was in Minnesota for his uncle's funeral, somebody was able to see his entire phone and take pictures of his Signal group chats talking about military deployments to Portland, and brought them to the Strib (gift link: www.startribune.com/trump-offici...)

They are drunk with, what they believe is, impunity of their violence. They are gleeful at the horrors they are inflicting. They are enjoying destroying people and hurting communities.

One thing that comes through awfully clearly in these ICE videos is how many of these goons gravitated toward the job because being able to assault people with impunity is a big thrill for them.

And folks felt that was a bit, uh, antagonizing and she got ratioed again. And now she’s on about how “Harassing the mods into banning someone has never worked.”
Three posts from Jay, Bluesky CEO:

Post 1:
“Harassing the mods into banning someone has never worked. And harassing people in general has never changed their mind.”

Post 2:
“Yet it's a behavior that persists across social media anyways, with negative consequences for civil discourse and society. Human nature is a contributing factor, but systems that reward outrage only make the problem worse.”

Post 3:
“We're system architects at core. We built a decentralized network so you could run your own moderation, but beyond that our upcoming healthy discourse project is taking some swings at the interaction model that drives these dynamics on Bluesky. Excited to start seeing it in action.”

CEO posted on a waffles comment. Then someone asked if they’d banned S*ngal. Then she replied with “waffles.” People had thoughts about her seemingly taking anti trans hate not seriously or not taking action on it etc. Then, she decided to double down and post a pic of a waffle.
A screenshot of Bluesky CEO, Jay, quote posting, a response to the post, and her reply.

First, a post from Jerry Chen which said “(Bluesky user bursts into Waffle House) OH SO YOU HATE PANCAKES.”

Jay’s quote posted that from Jerry, saying: “too real. we’re going to have to try to fix this. Social media doesn’t have to be this way.”

Lucas, another Bluesky account, responded to Jay: “have y’all banned Jesse Singal yet or”

Jay replied to Lucas with: “WAFFLES” The next day Jay, Bluesky CEO, posted:“Amazing breakfast this morning. I love waffles.” She included a photo of a round waffle, topped with berries and a dusting of powdered sugar (that is icing sugar for my UK, AUS, NZ etc. friends), on a table with dappled light.

Zip tying kids together, destroying property, handcuffing everyone, holding/detaining people for several hours… this is *not* “targeted enforcement.” Do not believe their lies.

This is many 4th amendment violations.
This is armed security forces goons terrorizing a community.
This is fascism.

They zip tied little kids together, shoved their guns in the face of a Black American grandma who came out in her nightgown, and destroyed building property with chainsaws.

My god.

“Watson said she saw agents dragging residents, including kids, out of the building without any clothes on and into U-Haul vans. Kids were separated from their mothers…’It was heartbreaking to watch…seeing kids coming out buck naked and taken from their mothers, it was horrible.’”

It's important to name the tools of authoritarianism so we can identify and condemn them with precision. I'm glad we now have a term for ICE's openly racist, degrading immigration arrests: Kavanaugh stops. slate.com/news-and-pol...
In the short time since Kavanaugh wrote that opinion, his assertions have been proved demonstrably, almost laughably false too many times to count. As Sherrilyn Ifill notes, the justice’s claims were already belied by the factual record in that case, which showed ICE agents violently harassing and detaining American citizens for extended periods simply because they are Latino. Now the agency, freed from constitutional restraints by SCOTUS, has stopped pretending to be engaged in anything other than racial profiling. Bovino’s admission only confirms what we already knew: These detentions, far from the “brief” inconvenience Kavanaugh described, are often lengthy, violent, and dangerous. Ifill and Anil Kalhan, a professor of law at Drexel University, have proposed calling these detainments “Kavanaugh stops,” a label that’s quickly catching on.

At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

bit by bit, the administration is laying the groundwork and actually carrying out a system of repressing democratic life in america. redefining opposition as terrorism, targeting critics, investigating civic funders.

we're so far beyond normal and, again, only eight months in.

Kimmel’s defiant return highlights one of the most disturbing dynamics of Trump II, that so many people in positions of leadership are chickenshit frauds who would rather fold in advance than put up anything resembling a fight www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
Kimmel’s refusal to capitulate stands out because so many other well-situated people—those with the resources, platform, and power to stand up to the president, including, initially, the leaders of ABC—have surrendered, withdrawn, or become Trump sycophants themselves. One by one, American leaders supposedly committed to principles of free speech, due process, democracy, and equality have abandoned those ideals when menaced by the Trump administration. These cascading acts of cowardice from the people best positioned to resist Trump’s authoritarian power grabs have made Trump seem exponentially more powerful than he actually is, sapping strength from others who might have discovered the courage to stand up. Defending democracy requires a collective refusal to acquiesce to lawless behavior from many different sectors of society. All of these powerful people trying to save their own skin have effectively multiplied Trump’s attacks on constitutional government, by enhancing a false sense of inevitability and invincibility.

Do it!! They are so much fun and such a great way to visit yarn shops you may not have had an opportunity to visit. And can be fun way to meet other local knitters/crocheters/crafters, or learn about knitting+ circles or events in your area. Plus, all the yarn (and notions) you’ll want to buy!

This is so awful. Acadia NP is such a special place. Visitors should be able to hear the real truth about climate change & the human impacts on these places. The important work of scientists should not be censored.
The erasure of info on Indigenous peoples’ experience & sacred spaces is despicable.

The federal government has censored the work of dozens of scientists, including work by my lab, on the impacts of climate change on Acadia National Park. Signs have been removed from Cadillac and Great Meadow. They’re also removing signs about the Wabanaki’s sacred connections to Cadillac.
