Whenever a new one of these comes out I feel like my awareness of what RPGs can be expands a thousandfold like when an indoor cat sees the sky for the first time
New Quinns Quest review is a boxed RPG special! 📦✨

I dunno folks, I think running RPGs out of 400 page hardback books might be dumb and bad

Rookie mistake tip: check how your pages look on mobile, lest you find out while on a trip far from home when you discover that it looks like browsing through a keyhole, hypothetically.

So come on over to my new and improved store page that does now have a good font size on mobile :p

me: I should challenge myself and branch out more, maybe try adapting or creating some more complex game mechanics

also me: Do a third DftQ game, make it a 2-player game about best-frenemies

4th game published, solo journaling, alternating perspectives of prehistoric wolf and human nomad surviving winter alone together. By day, story prompts as the wolf; by night, cave paintings as the nomad (sketchpad, digital art app, sidewalk chalk, etc.). Create an artifact of your journey.

for dozens of hours. Compelling writing, elegant ludo-narrative synergy. Fascinated with design docs, elements that feel essential yet weren't even in the original plans. Discover what art will become in the process of making it.

Making final edits on my fourth game, solo journaling alternating perspectives of a prehistoric wolf and a human nomad trying to survive winter. Story prompt cards from wolf's perspective; journaling nomad's perspective in the vibe of cave paintings. Behold sketches from one of my testers.

TIL back in the day they meant 6" on the battle map (so detecting evil at a range of 30' for the characters in the narrative), but my first thought was paladins having to get practically nose-to-nose with somebody to give them a vibe check.

Got so focused on publishing the third game, forgot to post about the second. Experimented with a dice mechanic similar to how Forbidden Lands handles consumables. In OM:EN it's your research assistants and then eventually probably you that will be consumed, via horrible space monster.

Some tips for breaking into tabletop RPG design! (1/9)

To create an RPG, you must first WRITE one. Pick a concept and go for it. Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Just get something on the page. Your journey begins with that first paragraph.

Returning to DftQ and iterating on the deck programming from Taba, my third game evokes classic tales of disparate outsiders drawn together to defend a community in peril. Go old-school with the classic frontier village beset by bandits, or experiment with your own settings and conflicts.

I think a lot about this and how a lot of the art I love is "have a really bad time, but in a safe environment that you control"

Tested a mechanic for my next game to use an additional wandering joker for spiking in more dramatic story prompts. Decided it was redundant for this game, but might be composted into a future project. www.tabletopsimulator.com is useful for prototyping, creating props and rewinding time at will.

Experimenting with deck programming for my next game. Suits represent different categories of story prompts. My first game Taba aimed for the vibe of reminiscing over drinks, recalling anecdotes in a non-chronological order while the overall emotional tone arcs towards the finale. (1/3)

Working on the art and print layout for my third game, so it's about time I got a Patreon going. Various tiers are available with assorted rewards such as being named in the credits and early access to playable previews. Stay tuned for more details on game 3, and beta/alpha builds of games 4 & 5.

Hello world. Looking to spin up more game design work soon, so stay tuned for updates on future projects. Primarily I enjoy designing tightly-focused single-session tabletop RPGs (of which two are published so far), but I've got aspirations of more complex campaign-type designs as well.
