I’m finding out the hard way after playtests that player aids are rules I need to consider removing. If something is not on the component or intuitive, I probably need to cut that from the game.

I also love to teach games, but I’ve also taught high school and college. In contrast, teaching a guided play-through of your prototype is next level, and it’s a discipline unto itself that still challenges and impresses me. But it’s absolutely essential for a game designer to master. 🎲✂️

I am one of those people... at a convention if I see a table set up and reading a rulebook for a game I know? I'll just walk up and ask if they want me to teach them how to play. I'm not an extrovert (people exhaust me) but I trained myself to be outgoing and now I startle strangers with that. 🤗

I went looking for a nice in-hand solitaire game that uses a standard deck of cards and found Blackjack Lite by Brian Kinsella. I tested it in the backseat on an hour-drive to Shakespeare in the Park. Got beat the first x3, but finally won. Joker and Black Knight are a fun addition. #boardgames

Yes! And when the player in possession flips one over to move the ball, it means you follow their instructions. That should cut down on just turning over all possible cards for fear of consequence.

After a recent online playtesting burst last week, I’m going into the Labor Day weekend with only 3/4 of my original advantage suits (🎩 @ericdittmore.bsky.social) But that made room to IRL playtest corner kicks, throw-ins, tackles, fouls, and the offside rule. 🎲✂️

In your final third of the field both players will play two cards in sequence. The first card to play for possession, and then the second for shoot/save, if possible.

Two worlds collided on Sunday. The ⚽️ season opened for my local college team where I am a play-by-play announcer.

GMW Fall 2025 Countdown - Soccer 54: Premier by Greg Pool

I have taken the advice a recent playtester in the pub and will retheme this game to "Foosball 74. Table soccer...on your table!"

The core game remains the same for playtesting this weekend at @protospielo.bsky.social but this should lower the barrier to entry a bit. #Soccer54 🎲✂️
