While hunting oryx today my dad and I encountered one of the biggest Western diamondbacks I’ve ever seen. It rattled at me from 30 feet away to ask me to keep my distance. I did.

There was no danger to any of us so I took some photos before leaving it alone.

Look at that rattle! Con mucho respeto.

Here’s my report on what I learned, and it includes some breaking news about a lawsuit that aims to undo the county’s Project Jupiter approvals. /2

After I reported last week that Project Jupiter’s biggest promises were included in drafts of legally binding agreements, I received new versions of those documents from Doña Ana County that were missing many of the pledges. I started asking questions. /1
Thanks to all of you who’ve been supporting my work. I really appreciate it!

There’s lots happening! More soon. /4

When Doña Ana County commissioners corrected a violation of the N.M. Open Meetings Act on Tuesday, I decided it was a good opportunity to write about why such laws are so important. /1

I’m a little behind on this story, so I dug deeper into issues related to road access, explored nearby development plans, and raised questions about the impact of the proposed land swap on local indigenous groups in the Las Cruces area. /1

I’ll continue watching Project Jupiter. I’ll also keep documenting how federal immigration policies are impacting our local communities. I’m working on some other articles, including one about a proposed land swap between the state and the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Keep reading! /3

Thankfully, County Commissioner Manuel Sanchez gave me the agreements, which allowed me to write this article about what provisions they contain. Give it a read or listen. /2

As you’ll read in my newest article, I’ve been unable to get copies of Doña Ana County’s legally binding agreements with the developers of Project Jupiter from county staff, even though it’s been weeks since commissioners approved those agreements. /1
