Amen. My haiku often still come out 5-7-5 due to years of writing in that pattern. I aim for something in the ballpark but don’t sacrifice meaning and impact for the count anymore.

Sticking with stirring the words is good. If the challenge does that for you, great!

If you mean you took liberties with the prompt, I can’t speak for the prompt provider in question, but I encourage people to let my prompts trigger far flung ideas. The purpose of a prompt is to get you writing.

If counting syllables is getting in the way of making a beautiful, concise poem, take heart! There is no “strict haiku structure,” only guidelines. Modern western haiku favors meaning and brevity over the count, and even the old masters ignored the count more often than any other guideline.

Haiku on Bluesky is varied, as the form has been historically, due to it being the poetry of the people. Modern western haiku puts more emphasis on meaning than syllable count. Even masters of the form ignored the count rule more than any other.
