Automatic weights themselves don't do it for me either. I like to use it as a base and go in after applying them and edit them

The reason I made that post was because my topology used to be a lot worse, and the automatic weights would be terrible, so it was easier to do them from scratch lol

a sheep furry leaning gayly on the railing of a firewatch tower in the middle of a forest. theres a cup of steaming tea on the railing and the light suggests its morning.

I decided to bite the bullet and dedicate some time to learning more about geo-nodes, so I made this sweater with some fluff on it

The power of spooky month approaching has pulled me out of my burnout because I like making spooky stuff. This is a WIP character that I'm creating for an animated scene

The cons seemed to outweigh the pros to me when I started, which kept me away from using it. Now that I know a good bit more about rigs, I think I'd rather use it.

Though, I'm going to watch some videos to learn more about how the addon works before doing anything
hazlek.bsky.social
For those who don't know, rigify is an addon built into blender that allows you to make a very functional rig in just the click of a button. It is quite customisable, which I didn't know beforehand, so I'm gonna learn how that works
hazlek.bsky.social
I've given up on making my own rigs for now. I've been avoiding rigify for a while, but I've just properly looked into it, and I suddenly feel enlightened

I wanted to test out the physics I added to her rig, as well as the rig itself, so I decided to make this quick animation

All-in-all, blender is definitely a difficult software to learn, but with enough well-targeted practice, you'll know how to do what you want to do quite quickly!

While tutorials are great, they can’t teach you everything. Once you have a general grasp of how everything works, try experimenting on your own with tutorials as more of a backup.

If you don’t know anything beyond the basics though, I would watch just general tutorials of things you find cool. They’ll help you get to know the program and get comfortable with it. There are a few, more basic, character modelling tutorials as well, in case you wanted to just focus on that.

I never finished it personally, as my file got corrupted, but it really helped me learn the process of character modelling. It’s been a year and a half since I watched it, but I don’t remember it being too hard to follow.

I absolutely do have advice for learning blender!

The donut tutorial is great, but it really only teaches you how to use blender. If you already know a little bit about blender, I recommend the "Bran Sculpts" Zelda tutorial.

Because automatic weights actually work on this model, I can spend a LOT more time making the rig as ideal for animation as I can

Unfortunately, I'm going to be away from my PC for a week, so it'll take a bit before this is finished
