there's something so fascinating about those times when something happens and everyone simultaneously gets the exact same idea on where to go

i think it's kinda sick honestly - it has a punk/album art quality to it that i think is really neat

there's other more obvious trends that showed up in the early 90s both in horror and cinema as whole too, like all of the computer-horror (which basically happened around the same time a whole early 90's cyberpunk mini-resurgence was happening) but i feel like that's a whole thread of its own

if i had to make a guess, i think the reason it was so consolidated into this period was probably a sort of intersection of renewed interest in film noire style visual direction alongside lots of goth, industrial and early grunge aesthetics garnering interest around the same time

when i think early 90's horror and thrillers i think 'lots of wet city streets at night, steam coming out of grates and pipes, etc, stark shadows' - obviously there's some prime examples of this in the mid-80s too but it felt especially in vogue between like '88 and '95

there's some really interesting undercurrents in early 90's horror/action-thrillers that I've noticed over the years - lots of environmental anxiety over the future (Predator 2's heatwave, Split Second's flooding, Hardware's post-nuclear society) and also tons of industrial-gothic art direction

Mario 2 makes a lot of sense because US Mario 2 is an entirely different beast, with Shenmue I suspect it was for the purpose of practicing/teaching English or just as a novelty for people to listen to the dub.

its really funny to me how Japan would sometimes re-release the US/EU releases of JP games back into Japan as like 'US Edition' or something. I can only think of two instances of this (Mario 2 and Shenmue) but still
