FASD-Informed interventions are well known to be brain-based interventions. When we expand this thinking to take into consideration the entire nervous system and how the nervous system responds to perceived threats, we open to a new way of understanding human behavior.
Please join us in exploring how reframing our understanding of human behavior via a nervous system lens can change the way we understand and support student interactions.

Back to School IEP Training!

We invite you to join Kelly Rain Collin and Wayfinder Family Services on Wednesday 8/20 from 1:00pm - 3:00pm to learn Tips & Strategies for Navigating IEPs.

We hope to see you there!
Wayfinder Family Services
A Training for Parents, Caregivers and Professionals Sponsored by Post Adoption Services
Tips & Strategies for Navigating IEPs Presented by Kelly Rain Collin, Ed.M. Wednesday, August 20, 2025 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
About the training
When a child is struggling in school, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) can provide critical support through customized services and accommodations. This training is designed to equip families with practical tools and strategies to confidently engage in the IEP process—especially when supporting children who are neurodivergent or whose challenges may not fit neatly into standard IEP eligibility categories. Join us in learning how to understand and navigate this process and become a strong advocate for your child’s unique needs. We will explore how to communicate effectively with schools, understand your legal rights, and ensure your child receives the support they need to thrive academically and socially.
Do you have a question you would like addressed? We will be having a 30 minute Q & A at the end of the training. You can also send your questions ahead of time to Postadopt@wayfinderfamily.org!
About the speaker
Kelly Rain Collin, Ed.M. is an Educational Consultant, Advocate, and Child Mental Health Specialist with a passion for helping children realize their potential and access their strengths. By bridging the fields of child development, education and mental health, she is able to assist families, schools, and mental health professionals in understanding and creating supportive plans to enhance children’s developmental trajectory and address their learning and mental health needs at school. Kelly Rain has been actively supporting families with navigating the special education (IEP) system for over 20 years and approaches advocacy from a collaborative perspective that incorporates current neuroscientific understandings of learning and behavior.

Analyzing FBAs with an FASD-Informed Lens
When creating Functional Behavior Analyses (FBAs) for individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), special attention needs to be focused on the underlying ability of the brain and body to respond to the task requested of the student. During this session, we will use an FASD-informed lens to analyze an FBA and tease out where it effectively addresses the student’s needs and where it falls short.

It is important that we not bash individuals' experiences, just because something doesn't work for everyone. Each body is different and each brain is different. The more we honor each others' experiences, the more we are able to be empathetic to one another.

While it is not a cure-all by any means, for individuals who have cerebral folate deficiency secondary to elevated levels of folate receptor autoantibodies, leucovorin (or high-dose folinic acid) can support both expressive language and regulation. It's not for everyone, but for some it is helpful.

In a world where FASD is still largely misunderstood and where our education systems have not fully embraced brain-based models of learning and behavioral support, it can be frustrating to feel like the canary in the coalmine. Yet many of us have had numerous successes in advocating for effective changes for our students. We invite you to share your success and learn from the successes of others.
