Five late antique communion loaves have been excavated in Turkey. Date from the C7th/8th, they have images of Christ, maltese crosses and a Greek inscription on them. Makes me think of all the bread stamps we must have lost from western Europe... www.anatolianarchaeology.net/1300-year-ol...

Yes. Very much that. It's more personal. And we're more likely to focus on brief feedback that captures the essence of things; foreground not background. Having limited space to write in is helpful, I think.

Huge variety. Coffins certainly weren't standard - shrouds, stone-lined, logs - all sorts - with lots of regional traditions. One of the questions we're currently trying to answer is 'why, sometimes, beds?'. As this study implies, there will have been different reasons at different times.
