I think deep down some of the grifters we have know this, but it's useful to them to peddle the lie that we all have to do the same thing, and be the same person.

When I was writing the new book - because tbh, the 80s was a hard decade for me at times - I kept coming back to the inescapable truth that what kept me going was: books, TV, comedy, radio, films sometimes, but above all music. That stuff's not frippery, it's how you become the person you are.
