After the Scottish Independence referendum, David Cameron didn’t believe he could lose a vote; and it did come as a terrible shock to many of us. I happen to know one of the (ex-)civil servants tasked with dealing with Brexit, and he confirms there was no plan.

We celebrated Hallowe’en in Kent in the 1950s and ‘60s when I was growing up, but then my father, my mother’s parents, and several close relatives, were Scots.
