"We're history finders"

It would seem not only finders ..... keepers as well !

Let's not forget history is everyone's and donating to Museums is an option
"I've never sold a single item & I've found thousands of coins."

'he keeps his finds carefully arranged in a display cabinet at his home.'

...that's just one #detectorist.

Multiply that by perhaps 40,000 people - that's an awful lot of artefacts.

A great input on #HeritageCrime this afternoon hosted by Bexhill Heritage. Lots discussed, one poignant and thought provoking phrase was:

"Heritage restoration projects can create respect"

Working together can and does look out for, and after our shared heritage.

Something a lot of people don't realise is that, if something is illegally detected (so detected where finder doesn't have permission from landowner), the landowner still gets the 'reward' money from the find - in fact sometimes 100% of 'reward' money!

A fragment of #Roman pottery, into which a sketch of a rowing ship has been incised - I love the little details, like the oars coming down into the water, & the ram at the front of the ship. A lovely piece of everyday art, made nearly 2000 years ago 🏺 #AncientBlueSky

A lovely piece of decorated Samian ware for today's Finds Friday.

This small fragment was recovered from layer(?) D10 at an unknown site, probably in Rochester. This small sherd is one of 33 sherds found in the Arthur Harrison collection from this unnamed site.

Tess doing doing such good work on mining PAS data for the stories they fail to tell about the impact of unregulated metal detecting. The figures on exports are staggering and hidden in sight.

The system is broken and overdue significant reform

Both St Mary's and St Nicolas Churches in Pevensey have been victim to anti social behaviour & damage.
Due to this both have had to lock there doors outside of services.
Please look out for our heritage and 📞 999 at the time should you suspect anything suspicious or out of place.

🤔In 2023 1/3 of reported metal detecting finds were exported!🤔

Yes, thats right they all left Britain😲
82% we're destined for North America, of those that went to Europe 52% went to countries where metal detecting is illegal of heavily restricted.
OK...I need someone to check my maths here.

This really is that 1/3 of the number of finds found in any one year & c.6% of the number of annual Treasure finds were exported in 2023?

The data is all from the 2023 PAS report.

Seriously, I'm not imagining this, am I?
