We were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal to the archive earlier this week.

We shared some of the amazing stories from our exhibition, The Town That Taught Itself, before she was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate for her services to the arts.

Sometimes archive materials need a bit of TLC. At last week's conservation training day with West Yorkshire Archive Service, our team practiced everything from dealing with water damage to - our favourite - cleaning items with smoke sponges ✨

Testing the 'new TV'

The latest innovation in the world of television - CEEFAX - is being used to help students on Communications and Digital Engineering courses to get degrees at Huddersfield Polytechnic.

A specially equipped television - one of only twelve in the country - flashes a variety of data, ranging from the latest Stock Market prices to recipes, on the screen.

The system, which will eventually become available for domestic viewers, is being studied by Polytechnic students under the guidance of Mr Roger Maude, the chief technician in Electrical Engineering.

Mr Maude said: "Our students have an option of studying the idea in their final year We are most fortunate in being one of the first to have the equipment."
