It's also a key to soft power. It's rarely accomplished by design and almost always unintentional/organic.

hmmm I guess the primary reason is when students only begin to *discuss" the idea of occupying their own campus (never mind Lujiazui) or workers begin to discuss organising in WeChat groups, they'd be arrested or reprimanded.

Wang Hui: "But...this expected “revolution” [Occupy Wall Street] has not yet appeared in China...Why?...China is vast and regions are unevenly developed has ironically acted as a buffer in the context of the financial crisis... Second, China has actually been in a constant process of adjustment..."

I’m nearing the limits of my endurance, but I took a first crack at thinking about the winners and losers from Takaichi’s surprising upset Saturday. Much more to come.

I wonder if to an extent the growing divide in men and women votes played into the surprise Takaichi win. In a recent NHK poll, more women showed support for the LDP than men, with men showing vastly more support for the right wing parties than women.

even though I have an entire research programme on the kind of binary narrative exemplified by the post (China this "the west" that, I even have a forthcoming book on it), at this point I find it extremely boring. and social media is horrible. bc this kind of stuff guarantees virality.
X post: One interesting difference I've noticed between the West and China, that few speak about, is the difference in approach when it comes to narrative management.

To a large extent the West's approach is to change the narrative in order to change reality, whereas China's approach is almost the opposite: change reality in order to change the narrative. It's basically materialism vs idealism.

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Jerome A. Cohen, the eminent scholar of Chinese law. Our condolences to his family and all those who loved him.

He authored many books, most recently the memoir, "Eastward, Westward: A Life in Law."

nationalist sentiments usually don't add up with economic reality but China is taking this to extremes. the 4 biggest trading partners are also the most hated countries in Chinese nationalism (one of them is not recog as a country, but like, trading heavily with someone you openly prepare to invade)
table showing largest trading partners of China: US, South Korea, Japan & Taiwan (ASEAN and EU top the chart if including regional blocs)

It's Banned Books Week! Go read a book they don't want you to read!
Reflecting the dialectical vagaries of censorship, Ding Richang's 丁日昌(d. 1882) 1868 "Banned Books List" has become the primary way to navigate Ming-Qing novels on Wikipedia. Yes, Dream of the Red Chamber (and all its spin-offs) is on the list.
