During the scuffle, Rhys got recognised as Dorian's son because the earring he was wearing was something Dorian had left with Rhys's mother. That, and Rhys looks quite similar to Dorian at his age. So, he was promptly captured.

Rhys was a fisherman who got captured by some pirates while fishing by himself and basically got press-ganged into joining the crew with his other option being fed to the sharks. A month later, those pirates got attacked by the most infamous alive, Dorian.
