Even though I was not able to be in Ascona in person for the Feminist Enlightenment and Politics conference, I was able to patch in via Zoom to talk about the role of women in #18thc elections, in processions and mock elections, and at election balls. #dancehistory #assemblyrooms #politicalhistory

I can get on board with Macaulay's course of treatment... Bring on the ice cream!

In 1771, historian Catherine Macaulay burned herself out so badly writing the fifth volume of her recent history of England that she spent four months eating ice cream and bathing in the sea to recuperate.

Writers, I present to you your role model.

Is anyone familiar with an eighteenth-century dance treatise or conduct book that has several plates of women gesturing with fans? I remember seeing such a book, but can’t recall what the title was… Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! #18thc #dancehistory

Yesterday's office for the day was the Gainsborough Bath Spa Hotel, where I gave a talk to a Jane Austen tour group on "Experiencing Austen’s Assembly Rooms". It was a great group, and they had so many wonderful questions! #assemblyrooms

Sir William Beechey, portrait of a young Kenneth Dixon playing shuttlecock (c1790), SMK, Copenhagen #c18th #c18 #18thc
Young boy outdoors, about to hit a shuttlecock with a small paddle. He is wearing black trousers and a tight-fitting black jacket, with a flouncy shirt billowing out at the top and a completely impractical broad-brimmed black hat trimmed with matching ostrich feathers

For Black History Month in the US, one of the most haunting things I've ever encountered at a museum: the silhouette of Flora, a 19 year old enslaved woman, made from life around 1796. I don't think I've ever seen a shadow carry such weight or sorrow. On display at New York Historical Museum.
