(Ghost of Christmas Future) Yes. Safe and affordable housing causally reduces violence.
Philly is about to embark on an ambitious affordable housing plan, hoping it will help reduce shootings in the years to come.

It's the kind of long-term public health approach to gun violence that experts say city officials should pursue. More from Mensah Dean for @thetrace.org
Could Philly's $2 Billion Bet on Housing Help Reduce Gun Violence?
Research has found that fixing up abandoned homes can make a city safer. The H.O.M.E Plan calls for building and rehabbing 30,000 homes in four years.

It seems unlikely that the continued wealth growth of the top 0.1% has led to less tax avoidance...
EXCLUSIVE: Federal tax prosecutions fell to their lowest level in decades this year, declining more than 27% from the year before as the Trump administration cut the ranks of attorneys and agents who pursue those cases, a Reuters examination has found.

Elon Musk’s charitable foundation grew larger than ever in 2024. But, for the fourth year in a row, the huge charity failed to give away the minimum amount required by law — and the donations it did make went largely to charities closely tied to Musk himself, who is the world's richest man.

The philanthropy has become one of America’s biggest, but most of its giving went to charities closely tied to the world’s richest man.

Of note, breakfast and lunch are free for Baltimore County school children
November 7, 2025 at 12:22 AM
Seems like a no-brainer to feed children. Additional plus is that caregivers don't need to pack a lunch!
School lunches get a bad rap, but they're healthier than the average packed lunch. And making them free for all amplifies academic and health benefits for low-income kids by removing stigma/shame.

So I'm glad Colorado voted to raise taxes on high-income households to make school meals free for all.

This is an amazing resource
A few years ago, The Trace launched the Atlas of American Gun Violence, a map that allows users to see where people are being shot around the United States. In the past, the Atlas has had limitations to the search.

In this updated version we’ve tried to improve on those.
Where Are People Being Shot in America?
The Trace’s Atlas of American Gun Violence has been updated to allow you to search by address, county, congressional district, type of shooting — and to download maps.
