How it all started:
The animal shelter profile for a cat called Merriam Webster (Mirri!). It says she's a spayed female brown-and-white mackerel tabby, nine months old. She's already had kittens even though she's a baby herself. Mirri was surrendered to the shelter because she's fearful and "too shy." She needs a quiet home and patient owner to help her learn to trust again. A picture of a cat with enormous amber eyes stares in terror from the upper left corner of the profile.
