We have published new guidelines on the use of medical radiological procedures for early detection of disease in people without signs or symptoms of that disease. The goal is to ensure tests are only used when benefits outweigh risks and individuals are fully informed.

Dr Kieran Walsh and Dr Helen O’Donnell, were shortlisted at the RAMI Research Awards for their rapid review on COVID-19 vaccine immunity in people with underlying conditions. Their work supports evidence-based decisions on booster timing.

Promoting radiation through inspecting and monitoring. 54 inspections conducted in 2024. 10 dental facilities (71% of regulations compliant) 44 imaging and hospital facilities (77% of regulations compliant). In 2024 we saw improvements: 5% increase in compliance with the regulations from 2021-2023. 15 facilities were re-inspected and showed improvements in regulatory compliance. Findings show: Stronger radiation protection practices. Greater awareness of regulatory responsibilities. Improvements needed in clinical audit. 1. Completed a radiation dose report with the EPA which showed doses received in healthcare facilities had slightly decreased. 2. Reviewed incidents of accidental and unintended exposures to radiation and shared lessons learned. 3. Published a scientific report on national radiation dose levels for fluoroscopy and fluoroscopically guided interventions. 4. Began preparations for the International Atomic Energy Agency's mission to assess Ireland's radiation safety standards. 5. Continued to engage with stakeholders, including Environmental Protection Agency, Heads of European Radiological Protection Competent Authority and professional groups.
