no, its not equivalent at all. the work place shorthand is just a good example of the social construct. Sports people playing for england, different artists, or english regional accents all make ones englishness.

exactly, i entirely agree. But the social construct does say people like sunak, jameela jamil, zyan malik are english? For example, in a scottish workplace they are english. There is also no dividing line in the spectrum of brown skin.

verbal assertion? Careful now. Its a social construct, so it has to be believed. He's closer to will from the imbetweeners than anyone else, and so his englishness should be as obvious.

Argentina looked so strong in the early tornament. Italy would go on to win and you could celebrate with a huge crowd in London's trafalgar sq. I never got to see it for the Euros final, but i bet it was smaller for other reasons...

Do you mean it was glossed by some ancient monk or a modern historian who may just be citing that 70s paper that is frankly now ubiquitously used to support this? Surely, if it's modern its not such a difficulty.

I think as it's in an ethnography, it adds to the evidence that it probably did not have a much more broad meaning as 'foreigner'. I feel that many would find that compelling.
January 13, 2026 at 12:34 PM
in these conversations, so i wonder what you think if it's as compelling and useful as I think it is.
January 13, 2026 at 12:24 PM
On another note, i read online that there is a frankish table of nations with the wealh cognate for the visigoths. The ethnography has goths and "walagoths". Obviously, it means roman goths. I imagine that's the visigoths romanising after many decades in southern gaul. I've not seen that example 1/2

yep makes sense! i do think i follow, I just wanted to double down to make sure!

Perhaps then it must be a much later reconstructed name, slave-slave is otherwise rather odd. Surely in the 6th centuries, wealh did not mean slave yet?

his wife is also called Wealh-theow. Recent genetic evidence, problematic as it often is, suggests a substantial central european and british migration to denmark before the viking age...

December 1, 2025 at 6:25 PM
i felt the same sort of thing once... in my 20s i used up all my precious savings to go to my grandfathers funeral. My pay was so low, goingnto it jusr hurt. I ended up just feeling angry rather than guilty, but i recognised that even then, it was either or.

We need one group of judices to keep meeting in a surviving civitas somewhere in the 5th century for this to be true. With what gildas let's on, it's probably true for a bit, at least?
