Hello #PortfolioDay !

I'm Jess, a freelance character artist and illustrator! I have a passion for creating art-nouveau-inspired portraits, and a deep love of illustrating delightful fantasy characters.

Artwork. Illustration of two characters in a children's-book style. On the left is a shepherdess with her hands on her hips. She wears a blue betgwn with tartan petticoat, which a sheep is chewing on. Her hair is red and very curly. On the right is a shepherd with fluffy white hair, sitting down. His crook is stuck in the ground, and there is a sheep perched on top.
Artwork. An art-nouveau style character illustration. A white-haired woman lounges with a curved dagger in hand. She wears a red cloak, a waistcoat with long tails and a poofy white shirt. The art-nouveau background has foxgloves and mountain laurel, and there is a white snake among the flowers.
Art nouveau style painting of a woman with brown skin and dark brown curly hair. She is wearing a green, slightly sheer dress. Behind her is a wheel shaped orange abstract motif, and she is framed by green petal-like ornamentation. On either side of her is a spray of red poppies and off-white gladioli.
Illustration of a white-haired fantasy Dwarf. He wears a green vest and has a morose expression

OK tantrum over I just pieced a little extra fabric onto the bits I had and now I'm good. It's just the lining anyway, not like it's gonna be visible

turns out being really careful about your measurements is fucking USELESS if you note the wrong damn amount needed in the first place

Well, I HAVE thimbles now. Now I gotta work out how to use them without feeling like I've lost all manual dexterity
holmesja.bsky.social
Ha yeah no lasting damage just some very sore fingers
holmesja.bsky.social
Yup that was it. Thankfully no lasting damage though!

Who needs thimbles, I thought, it's not hard to push a needle through fabric, I thought. Yeah well. Lesson learned. My poor fingers.

First attempt at a bear. Stitching could he neater and I probably should have used a stretch fabric or something fluffy but I don't think it turned out too bad!

This little fella came together surprisingly easily, only took a couple of afternoons by hand. Had to order some felt for the eyes but managed to recycle an old dressing gown for the rest of him. Anyway his name is Squidge and I would die a thousand deaths for him #sewing
A light-skinned hand holding a white baby seal plush. The eyes are felt appliqué and satin stitched to create reflections so it makes the eyes look very wet

Thank you! The embroidery took ages and I really need to work on my thread tension but I'm pleased with how it came out 😊

I'd do a little dance of celebration but then I'd need a lie down. Glad to have participated in this!

Our initial DNA results! DecodeME have discovered that people with an ME/CFS diagnosis have significant genetic differences compared to the general population.

DecodeME: The Results announcement post. The graphic has a blue background with a DNA helix. In the centre of the graphic it says ‘We have released our initial DNA results! We have discovered that your genes contribute to your chances of developing ME/CFS.’ At the bottom left of the graphic is an image of a research paper.

I made 87 billion cockups and stabbed myself more times than I'm proud to admit but I sewed a wee fella. Two wee fellas actually. On balance it was probably not smart to try making something that's got curved seams all over the joint.
