Thanks for remembering this one Dan. I've just checked what my Gt Uncle and 83 Sqn were up to - surprised that they only put up 8 aircraft of the 569 (all of which returned), but they also put up 5 on Frankfurt. Diversion or alternate I wonder? Ralph reported seeing flares cascading on Kassel..

2/2 The Spitfires were from 601 Sqn at RAF TANGMERE. One of the German crews survived and walked away, the others sadly died in the crash with the remains being "buried adjacent to the crash". Sadly there is no marker or memorial. A great review on our local history site...
I know it is VJ day, but in 1940 the Battle of Britain was raging. Some local history - on 15 Aug 1940, two Junkers Ju-88 aircraft were shot down in a field barely half a mile away from us, and only 5 minutes apart... ½
