Minegishi is lucky to have a second chance.
The apartment is quiet, the only sound is the night air fluttering the leaves of the houseplants, and the quiet breathing of their partner beside him.
They ran their fingers over his skin with familiarity. Minegishi remembered patching some of these up for him after a shared victory, or after finding him in the bathroom in the small hours of the morning when Shimazaki wouldn't speak of the whatever fight had left him beaten and bloody.
There were times when Minegishi wordlessly tried to close the wound with a needle and thread from a medkit, knowing their own first aid skills weren't enough, but both of them knew a hospital would be out of the question. A raised line of scar tissue zig-zagged across Shimazaki's shoulder - Minegishi had done a messy job of patching that one up, it had taken months to heal up properly. They traced the rough line with a finger, it cut over his flesh at sharp angles.

Some of these had been their own doing, during their spars with Shimazaki. Minegishi could remember the pride they felt when they could land a hit on him. That feeling was alien to them now, they had been a different person back then.
Shimazaki usually guarded himself well in battle, scars criss-crossed his forearms, his shoulders, his back. But a few littered his abdomen and more vital areas, there was a prominent one over his stomach, suggesting there had once been a deep gash there. Minegishi didn't know where that one came from.
Minegishi’s fighting style kept them shielded from many direct attacks, but even for them the occasional battle scar was unavoidable. As well as the more recent wound that snaked across their shoulders and around their abdomen like a rope burn; mostly faint, but jagged and ugly in places where the vines had bit into their skin. It still stung in the shower, a glaring physical reminder of the past, and their promise to live a new life.
The warmth of their partner in bed beside them made Minegishi grateful for that second chance. Shimazaki breathed softly in his sleep as Minegishi cupped his face.

The sharp cut under his cheekbone had been new, he hadn’t had that one the last time they had seen him at Claw. He never told them how he got it, and they didn't ask. It was faded now, barely visible in the low light, but they traced their thumb along the familiar ridge like muscle memory.
His eyelids flickered. They hadn’t meant to wake him, but before Minegishi could withdraw their hand, Shimazaki caught it in his own, and cupped it back against his cheek.
“What’s wrong, Toshi?”
“Nothing. Go back to sleep,” they said quickly. “Sorry for waking you.”
“ ‘S fine,” he murmured, though a little groggily. “Can’t sleep?”
“Mh.”
“You’ve got work tomorrow.”
“I know that.” they were too exhausted to be annoyed by that reminder.
They sighed. Shimazaki caressed the back of their hand with his thumb, his gentle touch relaxing them slightly. They felt him smile against their palm, and their own expression softened as well.

“You could take tomorrow off.”
“I can’t do that.”
Shimazaki huffed in mock frustration. “You’re difficult tonight, aren’t you?” He grinned and pulled them closer into a hug, ruffling the hair at the back of their head.
Minegishi felt the tension leave their body. They rested their head against Shimazaki’s shoulder.
“I love you, y’know.”
He laughed softly. “Where did that come from?”
Minegishi ignored him. Their lack of sleep was perhaps making them a little more affectionate than usual. They clasped their hands around his back, feeling the familiar rhythm of his breathing.
“I love you too, Toshiki.”
A small chink of light through the blinds fell over his cheek. As they felt him fall back again into a gentle sleep, Minegishi continued to trace the deep lines on his skin left over from a different life.

it feels like I'm getting sick. it's funny that my first thought was "maybe I daydream too many shimamine sickfics in my head" before remembering that i spent hours in a room with a sick guy who wasn't wearing a mask two days ago.
