Oakland Races Past Cleveland State to Move Above .500
It is a rare occurrence for Oakland to win back-to-back conference games by more than 20 points, but after a 97-74 win over Cleveland State on Friday night, it had done just that.  How rare exactly? It’s just the second time the Golden Grizzlies have done it since joining the Horizon League in 2013. The other time was in 2024.

The next Horizon League commissioner ought to listen to two of the conference's highest-profile coaches and examine whether the current scheduling process meets the HL's goals, Kyle Rossi writes.
De-Modernize The Schedule
Over the last week, two of the highest-profile head coaches in the Horizon League have offered blistering criticisms of the conference's schedule. Green Bay men’s coach Doug Gottlieb was one. After his Phoenix beat Milwaukee on Monday in front of 1,864 fans, Gottlieb took a vanilla question about the rivalry in an unexpected direction. “It stays a rivalry when the league figures out that that’s a bad day to schedule a rivalry game,” he began.

It's the fourth straight loss for the Penguins. Head coach Jon Coffman's Mastodons were up 7-4 at the first media timeout before Drew King's three-point play knotted it up at the 15:33 mark.

Travel, particularly within the Horizon League, is extremely repetitive. For both Kyle Rossi and Cleveland State women's basketball, seeing and experiencing the same things over and over invites comparisons to the past - for better or for worse.
Hard Miles
At roughly 9:00 PM on New Year’s Day, I collapsed on to a queen bed in room 105 of a Motel 6 in Elkhart, IN. I was nauseous, lightheaded, and terrified of the possible explanations for those occasionally-recurring symptoms. A Red Wings game and a couple podcasts kept me mentally online as much as required to navigate my car those four hours from home.

Youngstown State struggled a bit early on with a ready-to-go Oakland team on Monday. However, the Penguins pulled away in the second half for what was, ultimately, a comfortable 11th victory. James Moon has the details.
King’s Career Game Leads Penguins to Fourth Straight Win
The Youngstown State Penguins women's basketball team (11-4, 4-1 Horizon) made it a Manic Monday for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (4-11, 1-4 Horizon) with a dominant 81-58 victory at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center. It's the fourth consecutive win for YSU, who are in third place in the Horizon League standings. There were six lead changes in the first 4:27 of the contest, and YSU was up 16-12 thanks to a shot from Sarah Baker at the 1:13 mark, but Oakland tied it up at 16-all with back-to-back layups from Angie Smith and Layla Gold to end the period.

With six days into the New Year, a lot of movement has transpired within the #HLMBB Power Rankings. Griffin Beers made his debut with a list of the top teams within the HL.
First #HLMBB Power Rankings of 2026
As this is my debut on the power rankings, let's briefly go over what these rankings are based off of. These first rankings especially are rooted mainly in who has looked the best through the early portion of the league season. Things like how you played in the last week, who have you beaten, who have you lost to were thrown into a computer (my brain) and spit out the right combination.

For the Oakland Golden Grizzlies against Robert Morris on Sunday, it was rolling early and often. A 51 point first half sparked a double-digit lead after the first 20 minutes of action.  After the game, head coach Greg Kampe said the team played with urgency coming out of the locker room and was pleased with its defensive effort. “Our guys came out and played with great intensity,” Kampe said.

Phoenix Women Remain Perfect in Horizon League Play to Start 2026
The calendar has turned to 2026, and while many people out there are making resolutions for the new year, one thing has remained the same: Green Bay women's basketball is still the team to beat in the Horizon League. Milwaukee Stuns Cleveland State: Five Observations
Cleveland State fell to 12-5 overall, and just 2-4 in Horizon League play, following a 66-58 loss to Milwaukee on Sunday – the latest, and possibly ugliest, in a string of concerning defeats this season. Here are five things that stood out in UWM's Klotsche Center: 1. It’s awfully hard to avoid the idea that the defeat may very well be the worst CSU has experienced during Chris Kielsmeier’s tenure, at least when measured against expectations.
