Interested in phylogeny and evolution of metazoans and related topics

“Integrative Phylogenomics” Integrates Sources of Error

Just on time for the holidays! Happy to share the published version of the discovery of leptophytes, a new deep-branching and widespread group of microalgae based on plastid MAGs (ptMAGs). Now with additional support from a mitochondrial MAG (mtMAG) of leptophytes.

For what it's worth, I submitted it as a regular Letter and the editor invited me to submit an eLetter. I do not think that venue is ideal for a response to such a flawed paper, but I also figured it was the best option for now.

In short, the methods were seriously flawed and the dataset broadly supports ctenophores sister with robust, theoretically sound methodologies.

I posted an eLetter to the recent Science paper claiming strong evidence for sponges as the sister group to all other animals.

How about #Crustmas crustaceans that parasitize other crustaceans? Tantulocarids are both asexual or sexual within their life cycle. This pic has a male developing in a sac inside the larva, attached to a tanaid. We aren't sure of their relationships but they may be close to barnacles! 🧪🦑

New preprint out! Using ~75k environmental OTUs + 77 fossil calibrations, we reconstructed a Proterozoic timeline of eukaryote evolution. Our results show crown eukaryotes were already diversifying >1.6 Ga, long before the first undisputed fossils (~1.05 Ga).
