Day4: Language

When I first read the inscription on this one, I thought “Beloved and…. Deplored?!”

A case of semantic drift in a historical sense - and and apparently it means to deeply grieve, not that they also disliked her intensely 🤣

A small gravestone of Charlotte Fuller Brooks, covered in green algae and lichen. The stone rests against a brick wall nestled by two other gravestones, surrounded by autumn leaves. On top, framed by the stone is an image of her dressed in a collared shirt and a blue jacket. She appears to have had white hair but this image has faded over many years.

The inscription further reads;
“Beloved and Deplored - Memory - Be her whose gentle love, begat a love, change cannot wean, nor time subdue. Charlotte Fuller Brooks, Died January 9th 1868.
