When eight became nine...NEW #ORCA CALF!

Over the moon to watch and film the new addition to the Northern Isles Community '27s' pod off Lunna, #Shetland today alongside first-time mum '152'. 🖤🤍

A short video of the stunning male Siberian Thrush that has graced Asta, Shetland for the last few days. What a bird!

This first winter Red-breasted Flycatcher graced our Shetland garden early this morning. It's the second we've had in the garden so far this autumn!

And thanks to Julian and Jason for their shoulders to lean a lens on!

Storm Petrel vs Storm Amy...

Many European Storm Petrels - known as 'Alamooties' here in Shetland - were blown inshore off the back of #StormAmy. This one was battling against the wind in Scalloway Harbour yesterday morning.

Cannot see that thread Steve - can you send post it in a reply.

Lovely views of the first winter male Siberian Thrush as it feasted on elderberries at Asta, Shetland this afternoon.

From northern Fennoscandia (and Russia) with love.

Nice to see my first migrant Jack Snipe of the Autumn here in Shetland.

In typical habitat and in a typical pose. Amazing birds.

Snowball! Our Autumn birding group enjoyed lovely views of this beautiful Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll at Vaylie, Unst yesterday. Thanks to our good friend Rich Andrews @mrbristolian.bsky.social for the pic.

Crypsis of the highest order: a Brindled Ochre moth blending in with tree bark in our #Shetland garden yesterday.

Lovely views of this crisp and very vocal first year Citrine Wagtail at Seafield, Lerwick, Shetland earlier in the week.

Lovely flight views once again of the North American Blue-winged Teal with Eurasian Teal at Loch of Hillwell today. Still a very rare bird in these parts with around ten Shetland records.

A nice addition to the house list...

I hope so. We will keep an eye on it.

Sickening to see a clump of monofilament line trapped around and damaging the dorsal fin of this Risso's Dolphin off Trondra today.

Monofilament is a silent killer of wildlife.

Whoever discarded this clearly just doesn't care.

We can see them in any months of the year - at the moment there really is not reliable pattern other than perhaps November.

Predominantly seals (Harbour and Atlantic Grey) but also Harbour Porpoise.

Delighted to find this Pale Pinion on sugar in our garden last night. Only the second-ever Shetland record with the first also found on sugar at Eswick just over 25 years ago on 15 September 2000.

ORCAS!!! A few clips of the '65s' Northern Isles community Orcas - including 'Busta' the huge adult bull - hunting close inshore here in Shetland this summer. Enjoying life as nature intended - in the ocean and not in a swimming pool.

Spectacular views of this Red Kite at various locations in the south Mainland of Shetland today. A rare species this far north with <50 records. Pic as it drifted north over the home patch of Loch of Hillwell this afternoon.

Out 'sugaring' for moths in our Shetland garden last night underneath this beautiful #Aurora. Nature's very own firework show.

Lovely views of this juvenile Little Stint among the kelp at Scatness, Shetland yesterday. Not only are Little Stints very little (about the same length as a House Sparrow), they're also very light - about the same weight as three 50p coins...
