Hi Bluesky, we're The Humane Research Trust. 👋

In our 60 years as a charity we've funded over 280 scientific projects across the UK, advancing knowledge of human diseases WITHOUT animal experimentation.

We're striving towards a future for science that doesn't involve animal suffering. Join us! 🧬
Next week, we’ll be joining our fellow members of the Alliance for Human Relevant Science for a special showcase at UK Parliament.

This is our chance to speak directly to MPs about the urgent need for a clear, ambitious roadmap to phase out animal testing in the UK.

‘Advances on tissue engineering approaches for developing complex cancer tissue models’

We’re seeking speakers for the symposium we are supporting at TERMIS-EU 2026.

📅 Submission deadline: 13 Nov 2025

We're proud to fund University of Oxford scientists who are using microfluidic organ-on-a-chip models to recreate the human brain vascular network and study a cause of stroke.

🚨 The UK needs a clear plan to end animal testing. We want to see a roadmap that is detailed and action-focused.

🗞️NEWS: British scientists carried out 2.64 million procedures on live animals last year.

The UK gov just released the latest stats on the use of animals in British labs.

Ultimately, why refine procedures or reduce the number of animals used in research if the experiments themselves lack human relevance?

Replacement is the only 'R' that matters.
We're delighted to support an Royal Society-sponsored event: 'A human focus for 21st century life sciences', as part of the Alliance for Human Relevant Science 🧬

In Feb 2026, join us in London for two days of discussion:

At THRT, we fund research that replaces animal testing with human-relevant methods like QSAR - which use computer simulations to forecast toxicity and drug responses.

It’s science that’s smarter, faster, and kinder.
Organoids are made from pluripotent stem cells, which have the unique ability to differentiate into any cell type in the body.

By essentially recreating an organ, researchers can mimic biological processes, study diseases that affect that organ, and test potential treatments.
We're funding @uniofaberdeen.bsky.social scientists to study the cellular mechanisms underlying neurological conditions like Alzheimer's. 🧠

They're using human cortical cells grown in the lab, enabling them to model these kinds of conditions much more effectively.

The 'smoking beagles' scandal of the 1970s brought huge public attention to the horrors of animal testing.

But dogs are STILL used in UK medical research.
Putting aside moral concerns, findings from animal studies often do not translate when applied to humans.

That's why we call the animal-free methods that our scientists develop, 'human-relevant'. It means they can produce research results that are actually applicable to people, not lab mice.
We were delighted to be visited by our local MP @tommorrisonmp.bsky.social today!

A big thanks to Tom for taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to us about achieving a cruelty-free future for science. 🐇
"85% of human DNA is shared with mice" is a claim often used to justify rodent research models.

But similarity in DNA sequence =/= similarity in biology.

Even small genetic differences matter. That's why we're so focused on funding human-relevant approaches to medical research.
Genetic modification. Organ removals or transplants. Exposure to dangerous/painful chemicals. Forced breeding. Infection with disease. Food, water, or sleep deprivation. Repeated drugging. Electrocution.

These are just some of the procedures that laboratory animals can face.
If you missed it, we recently committed another million pounds towards animal-free biomedical research.

We are ecstatic to announce that we have just committed another million pounds to life-saving medical research using entirely animal-free methods! 🎉

We may be a small charity - but we're having a big impact.

Imagine if rollercoasters were safe in simulations but malfunctioned 95% of the time in real life.

Wouldn't we just admit that the simulations don't effectively predict the safety of a ride, and stop using them?

Yet, medicines face the same odds after animal trials.
We love this campaign from @keintierversuch.bsky.social which challenges the idea that patients should be grateful that animals are used to research their disease. 👏

The German charity spoke with patients facing different conditions about their views on animal experiments.

Why do so many people see animal cruelty as justified when it's done in a lab?

Animal experiments are horrific, and the results don't even translate into humans. It's time to stop turning a blind eye to this kind of cruelty.
