Funeral Invitation, 1688.

Funeral invitations first appeared in the 17th century, and acted as an admission ticket to both the church and the funeral feast. Pallbearers were often assigned a number on the ticket to signify their position in carrying the coffin.

A funeral invitation from April, 1688. It has an ornate black border with various memento mori iconography around it - like skeletons, winged hourglasses, and scythes.

This was SO good! Zeb was such a wonderful protagonist and might just be my favorite of Charles’. The marriage of queer romance and gothic horror was perfect.

I adore the use of classic tropes and I had to have changed my theory on what was going on half a dozen times.

One thing that interests me about vampires is characters going through a huge change and having to adapt to that world after. (A lot of people with severe forms of my illness describe it as feeling like they've died or are now ghosts in their own lives, and maybe that's why it feels significant to me.)

This character has a realisation that the world is changing and something they've been striving for is destined not to succeed. After that, they end up isolating and almost entombing themself, collecting the bones of every creature they've killed by mistake, and wanting to commemorate them in some way. I wanted to try to capture this sense of the character both finding comfort in the macabre, but also they've sort of made a home in their own melancholy and guilt. They're unable to move forwards, reminding themself over and over of what they've done wrong."
