Congratulate Victor:
#wkwsci | Victor Zhuang | 26 comments
I am pleased to share that I have been awarded the Christopher Newell Award, presented by AANZCA (the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Communication Association) at the 2025 AANZCA Conference. Christopher Newell AM (1964–2008) was a leading researcher and advocate in the field of disability and communication. As a person with disability, he undertook pioneering work in telecommunications to foreground questions of disability and accessibility within Australian telecommunications policy and practice. His many roles included serving as Chair of the Australian Communications Industry Forum Disability Advisory Body and as a member of the Council of the Australian Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman. The Christopher Newell Prize is awarded to the best paper presented at an AANZCA conference that addresses issues of disability and communication, or broader questions of equity, diversity, and social justice as they relate to communication. The award reflects both Christopher Newell’s legacy and AANZCA’s longstanding leadership in advancing disability-focused scholarship within communication studies. I have heard so much about Christopher Newell and his work through Gerard Goggin, and I am deeply honoured to receive an award that bears his name. This recognition cannot be possible without the many efforts of other disability scholars at AANZCA, including Gerard Goggin, Katie Ellis, Ashleigh Haw (she/her) Stephanie Mantilla, but also folks like Kathryn Locke Kim Cousins Wenqi Tan and many others, all of whom have flown and continue to fly the flag of disability research at AANZCA. My thanks also to AANZCA and the selection committee for this recognition, as well as the disability scholars, mentors, and colleagues whose work and guidance have shaped and informed my own. Looking forward to more years of disability research in communications and media studies! #wkwsci Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information | 26 comments on LinkedIn

Last night we announced the top three scorers of the 2025 Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR) competition. They were: First place: Code Your Dreams by A11y Cats Second place: Esther's Walking Journey by Usabellas Third Place: Westside Queer Resource Center by The Accessibeasts Spirits were high as we convened over 100 local and virtual participants. Old timers and newbies shared stories of learning digital accessibility or honing their existing skills. We looked back at Knowbility's history with the two co-founders Steve Guengerich and Sharron Rush on site and looked forward to an exciting future as Jillian Fortin Burtnett prepares to take on the role of Knowbility Executive Director in May. A tribute to the late David Dauber, friend to all, tireless disability advocate, and program Chair in 2025, touched us all. We were all winners last night - NPOs had shiny new accessible websites, web pros had learned new skills, and the joyful community of advocates for digital equity grew stronger. Visit the AIR pages of Knowbility's website to learn more and sign up to stay in the Know for AIR 2026 and Knowbility's other award-winning community programs. https://lnkd.in/er64DhAu Thanks to staff, volunteers, and all who make AIR the unforgettable experience it has been since 1998!
