(2/4) Once essential for transport and drainage, the canals of Fort Kochi have suffered due to pollution, waste dumping, and unplanned urbanisation, making them prone to flooding. Reviving them is now critical to Kochi’s climate adaptation efforts.

(3/4) The initiative, supported by ICLEI South Asia under the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)- funded CapaCITIES project, has already shown results by reducing flooding in several areas of Tiruchirappalli, including Kalinga Nagar and Ayyappan Nagar colonies.

(2/4) By strengthening bunds, restoring storage capacity, improving inlets and outlets, removing silt, and reviving a defunct irrigation channel, the city has managed to rejuvenate the lake and ensure better flood management in the Koraiyar river basin.
