We’ve added Nurses for the Needy (1875) by Ellen Ranyard to our collection. A rare and fascinating look at the training of Bible-women nurses serving London’s poorest communities. This signed edition sheds light on early nursing education .

LibraryThing is a free catalogue that may work for you. We use it for our library and second hand books.

Does anyone have any recommendations for apps to record the books you own? It was bound to happen eventually, but this weekend I bought a secondhand book I already have. It doesn’t need to be anything special.

Started work on @ihgs.bsky.social migration assignments tonight looking at surnames originating outside Great Britain and Ireland - absolutely fascinating how much you can find out about families by tracing their movements from overseas to different places and in different time periods.

Just spotted on the FreeBMD website: support sought for a new project, FreeProbate (or FreePRO). Initial pledges of £100 or more via theBigGive are sought (deadline 29 Aug 2025) to unlock match funding during the Christmas Challenge in December. More info on the FreeUKGenealogy website.
Image: Screen grab showing pop-up message on the FreeBMD website. Text as follows:
Thank you for using FreeBMD.
New project alert! Seeking YOUR support for FreeProbate!
Launching in 2026, it will be the only free-to-access probate index of its kind, searchable by deceased and executor names, date, address, occupation.
To launch the new website, we need to raise £10,000 in pledges for this year's Big Give Christmas challenge to unlock the match funding. If you feel you can give £100 or more, please use the buttons below to read more and lend your support.
Don't worry if you'd like to support us with a smaller amount: you can do so easily during the Christmas Challenge campaign later this year.

🚨 The Suffolk parish registers will be online 6 days earlier than advertised - the latest update says they’ll be released on Ancestry on 8 August! 🥳 That’s my weekend sorted out! Great news for my #Sudbourne #OnePlaceStudy #AncestryHour #OnePlaceWednesday #GenHour
Screenshot of an email which says:
“Dear , exciting news. We can announce that Suffolk’s historic parish records from the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich will be available to search online for the first time from 8 August thanks to our partnership with Ancestry. Not only does it open-up centuries of the county’s history like never before it also preserves these irreplaceable documents for generations to come. Access will be free of charge here at The Hold in Ipswich – the home of Suffolk Archives, and at all of Suffolk’s libraries. Ancestry subscribers can also explore the records from home. This partnership will see additional local interest records digitised for viewing over the coming months.”
