This store just went up and an effete-yet-powerful bald man is about to have a frustrating day
Wife has "Gold" by Spandau Ballet playing in the next room and I'm realising it's fully become a detergent jingle in my mind now.
When I use a little bit of cheese to lure the dog out from under the bed and into his crate, I never know if he watches the crate door clang shut and thinks "damn it, why do I always do that" or if he's thinking "worth it"
For context, Akira Yoshida was later revealed to be the pseudonym of a white American guy who did not in fact have a prior celebrated career in manga. And I'm pretty sure Marvel knows, since he's currently their editor-in-chief.
Kinda fun to learn that Marvel Unlimited gets their descriptions by just copy-pasting old comic solicitations without any kind of editing pass.
"If you didn't divert all your money into the military and assorted giveaways to the rich you could have this too, and honestly way better than we do it" is a tedious and basic bitch of an answer to the healthcare question but sometimes it do be like that.
I realize I'm "well, in Europe" posting, but yeah. Well, in Europe. And frankly Ireland is nowhere near as wealthy a country as the US. It's not even in the same ballpark.
My contribution to the Obamacare discourse is that shortly after we moved to Ireland, totally uninsured, my daughter needed surgery and a week's stay in the hospital, and it cost us €480 soup to nuts. The nurses warned me there'd be a fee and expected me to be upset.
Apparently some people think this guy is the thief and not a detective, to which I say: he is wearing neither a stripey shirt nor a domino mask. Educate yourself on French culture.
It is this guy's moment. For years he's had to issue traffic tickets and file reports for liquor store holdups while dressed like that. But he knew, one day.
This photo accompanying a news story about the heist at the Louvre is perfection.
I listened and man, it's as enunciated as you'd expect
I don't know where I'm going with this, other than "damn there's a reason lefties love DS9 huh." It's a real stark friggin contrast to Discovery hailing Elon Musk as one of the great men of history, or Enterprise muddling its way to the future through post-9/11 politics.
What's more, this all happens before the tech that makes post-scarcity happen. "There's not enough to go around" is brought up as an excuse for the way things are and is roundly rejected.
"Past Tense" is a different animal. It states firmly that 20th century capitalism is going to metastasize into something morally untenable, and soon. The ideology of you, the viewer, is identified as one of the obstacles to the Federation's future.
Humanity had to overcome socials ills to reach the future of the Federation, but they're all non-ideological... war, disease, and the occasional nod to "hunger." Horsemen, not beliefs or ways of living.
More thoughts: the extent to which Star Trek is socialist is generally wildly overstated. Star Trek is easily readable as a future in which technology has made post-scarcity possible, which then made your unrealistic lofty lefty ideals possible, not one in which those ideals helped humanity advance.
Watching the Bell Riots episodes of DS9, and one thing I love about them is that the sanctuaries are full of everyone from families who just want work, harmless mentally ill people, and violent bullies/psychos, and the text is unambiguous that they all deserve better than this
Also: the costuming on the San Francisco tech millionaires does a good job of making them look like British aristocrats in a Dickensian story about ignoring poverty without hammering you over the head with it.
I also love how the antagonist in the dumb hat looks like a boy band member trying to start a solo rap career in the early 2000s, this show was so prescient

Being in a different time zone than the US means you greet each morning with a long sigh as you realise you're gonna have to keep scrolling to learn why the jokes about the president shitting are getting weirdly more specific the farther back you go
Of course "Finally" by CeCe Peniston came out in 1991 so we can't be too rigid about dates here
80s pop musicians love making songs where the premise is "I'm horny for the first time and it's so cool, I gotta tell someone about this"
Sprinkle a little kosher or maldon salt on your pizza before you bake it, over the cheese. This has been Illoumalnati's tip-o-the-week
My most unwelcome immigrant-coded trait is hearing a news report that the Dublin City Council is going to crack down on Halloween bonfires this year and saying "good"
I mean having watched Discovery, I can see the overlap. Did you enjoy seeing Section 31 recast as heroes while Elon Musk is explicitly praised as one of the founders of civilization? Buddy have we got the movie for you.
