The 40-Year-Old Virgin never shoulda worked as well as it did. A movie about a middle-aged guy who hasn't gotten laid? Thank goodness Judd Apatow, Steve Carrell, and a gaggle of amazing talent made it a gem still worth celebrating, even today.

Check out my revisit at @spectrumculture.bsky.social!
Holy Hell! The 40-Year-Old Virgin Turns 20 - Spectrum Culture
The movie’s deftness in getting the balance right – between horny chaos and tender romance – is a work of magic, and it’s why the movie still works so well today.

Last week, I caught the incredible #RebeccaBlack (with the also incredible #BlueHawaii) at the Hawthorne Theatre last week. One of the best pop shows I've seen in ages, all in a 550-capacity room.

Check out my review at @spectrumculture.bsky.social! And stop sleeping on RB!
Concert Review: Rebecca Black/Blue Hawaii - Spectrum Culture
Fourteen years after being thrust into a warped version of fame, Rebecca Black has harnessed it to create exactly the music she wants to make.

Sitting down and writing something is a tough and scary thing to do, so we should raise a toast to my bestie @aidankedz.bsky.social for actually DOING THE THING! Check out their first Substack post about underseen films they watched in January. SUBSCRIBE, TOO, DAMNIT!

Look I don’t want to be too whatever on main, but I have learned that the easiest way to mesmerize both of my cats, to the point where I can kinda herd them, by just enticing them with my riding crop.

Just the end of it is more powerful than catnip to them!

I caught WICKED: PART ONE last weekend! Though it turns out to be controversial, I thought it was only okay. Read my review over at @spectrumculture.bsky.social now!

While I'm here: I also wrote about seeing @matadorrecords.bsky.social darlings Pretty Girls Make Graves on their New Romance victory lap. Was it a packed show? Not a chance - but that tidbit couldn't have mattered less to anyone who NEEDED that show.

Check that out at @spectrumculture.bsky.social!
Concert Review: Pretty Girls Make Graves - Spectrum Culture
A reunited Pretty Girls Make Graves brought hope, solidarity and a reminder of the past.

Wrote about the absolutely seminal Paper Television by The Blow (and @y-a-c-h-t.bsky.social) over at @spectrumculture.bsky.social this week. I've loved this album for a very long time and it was difficult to contain all my feelings about it. Give it a read!
Rediscover: The Blow: Paper Television - Spectrum Culture
Unexpectedly, Paper Television feels like a stealth tribute to the music of the Pacific Northwest, swiveling from twee to grunge to lo-fi pop, with hints of riot grrrl in its brattiness and its cynica...

Ally McBeal update: Ally McBeal is unhinged, doesn’t get jokes, and is prone to wild bouts of fantastical thinking. She just pulled out a book about Freudian joke theory. Ally McBeal is fucking autistic.

Thanks to a stupid Aubrey Plaza video, Riley and I are suddenly eight episodes into Ally McBeal. I know that Ally and Georgia aren’t going to fuck, and I’m gonna make my sapphic anger over that EVERYBODY’S problem.

That coffee scene? Get outta here.

For no reason in particular, here's my review of the reissue of the Blood Brothers' classic, seminal CRIMES. The questions it asks may resonate with you. Check it out over at @spectrumculture.bsky.social!
The Blood Brothers: Crimes (20th Anniversary Reissue) - Spectrum Culture
That the band has seen fit to re-emerge into the world in time for the 20th anniversary of this album feels fitting — nothing has changed.

Hello, @themountaingoats.bsky.social - I’ve come for BSKY for two reasons:
1) To share with you this photo from the Neptune, where every visible face is in a different state of blissful revelry.
2) To ask (it’s a tall ask!) that you play Design Your Own Container Garden in Portland tonight, please.
