A boutique record label focused on noisy, inventive, beautiful music. We also review relevant releases.

New series alert: we’re going to start showcasing our collection of rare, and beautiful CDs, including many we’ve collected from house shows, basements, and long-lost bands that played three shows and disappeared before creating a MySpace profile.

For the past six weeks, an AI Facebook account has been pulling my history posts on Instagram and slopping out new captions, so I’ve been feeding it poison pills and its followers are having meltdowns in the comments. It’s been pretty spectacular.

Hot take: any publication that posts a “best of” list before January 1st is deeply unserious and hasn’t done their due diligence.

SHINY LITTLE CIRCLES No. 7: Dave Holland Sextet - “Pass It On”

Holland is an accomplished and innovative bandleader/composer, pushing a contemporary form of post-bop drawing from free jazz and the avant garde. This CD bears his signature, acquired at Boston’s Regattabar

SHINY LITTLE CIRCLES No. 6: Manu Katché - “Neighborhood”

A staple of ECM’s modern European jazz catalog. Dark, slick, melodic, spacious, and groovy driven by Katché’s inventive cymbal work.

SHINY LITTLE CIRCLES No. 5: Happy Apple - “Happy Apple Back On Top”

Playful and palatable free jazz driven by The Bad Plus’s Dave King on drums. Less dissonant and more hypnotic than you might expect.

SHINY LITTLE CIRCLES No. 4: Owls - “Two”

The “new” Owls record from 2014. These guys are weapons-grade off kilter, taking normal components of Midwest emo and combining them in bizarre, infuriating, and ultimately beautiful ways.

Folk Punk if Folk Punk was actually good
SHINY LITTLE CIRCLES No. 1: Hop Along - “Get Disowned”

Our first post in the series is a staggeringly beautiful package from Hop Along. “Get Disowned” is a sinewy and jagged album powered by Frances Quinlan’s ragged, electric, unmistakable voice.

SHINY LITTLE CIRCLES No. 2: Many People Walking - “Cups and Bites”

These guys played a lot of living rooms and basements in western Massachusetts around 2008. Fun as hell math punk. They did have a MySpace page at one point, but these CD-Rs might be the last remaining artifact.

Hit a few nice milestones in the month since TFIIOU(ATSTY) was released - crossed the 1000 monthly listener threshold on Spotify, made it onto some cool playlists, and racked up a few thousand streams along the way. Thank you so much for the support, and all proceeds go to @cleanaircatf.bsky.social

Has anyone else noticed grocery quality falling off this year? Produce is spoiling faster, and there are more bugs/debris in dry goods. What's the reason?
1. Cuts to the FDA and lower food quality standards?
2. Labor shortages due to an assault on the workforce?
3. Cutting corners to offset tariffs?
