Can’t wait to give lectures about the geologic history of Iowa to unsuspecting party guests in my apartment
The earth sciences club I’m a member of held a fundraiser yesterday. I picked up two books, a map bedrock geologic map of Iowa, a USGS quadrangle in alaska, and a few postcards.

I did some fossil hunting up at the (aptly named) Coralville Lake yesterday.

She mentioned that DoD has been a good provider of digestible climate info. Climate change being a national security risk has been something I’ve thought about since I started studying geoscience. Unfortunately some ‘thinkers’ in the Naval world disagree.
I attended an excellent seminar about communicating climate change to less-than-accepting communities. Dr. Schoerning’s key points were the importance of body language and the use of simple vocabulary. People care about the climate, but scientific jargon deters many folks from a full understanding.

Pumpkin patches are expensive and crowded, so the roommates and I did a fall photo shoot in the hyvee parking lot. Good memories.

It was a perfect 60° for today’s Hawkeye game. I never watched college football growing up in Mass but coming to Iowa turned me into a fan.

Try and spot the KC-135 in the pic with the helicopter.

A few more photos from South Dakota. Peering under my rain fly and seeing bison hoofs at 2:30am was quite the experience. The prairie dogs at our campground were very comfortable with humans around than others I’ve seen.

Just got back from a wonderful few days in the Badlands on a geology field trip. Highlight of the trip was finding some sort of megafauna fossil in a recently eroded cutbank.

I had a stressful week so I decided to go on an adventure today. Other than my destination I had no plan, so figuring out the route as I went was part of the fun. It was peaceful, beautiful, and mentally engaging.

Disappointed to see so many folks dismiss this on 🐦. You’d hope so called “navalists” would see yearly cat. 3-5 hurricanes impacting Kings Bay, Pensacola, Jacksonville, Tampa, or Norfolk as a serious threat.

I’m happy to have represented my adoptive home state of Iowa in Justin’s quest for a package from all 50 states for his exchange student. If remember right I sent 2 local fossils, postcards/stickers, and a pack of Desert Storm trading cards. She’s lucky to have your family as hosts!
