As Uganda's elections approach, government agencies have a responsibility to uphold press freedom. We condemn the censorship of Nation Media Group journalists covering parliamentary politics.

A statement from the International Press Association of Uganda. It reads: KAMPALA, 31 October 2025 – On 28 October, journalists working for Nation Media Group were prevented from entering the Parliament of Uganda. Parliamentary officials gave no explanation for their exclusion, and some journalists were threatened with arrest when they protested. This was not the first instance of targeted censorship by the highest offices in Uganda. In March, journalists from Nation Media Group and Next Broadcasting Services were detained by security forces while covering the Kawempe North by-election and their equipment was destroyed. Since then, members of Nation Media Group have been blocked from attending public events where President Yoweri Museveni is present, including campaign rallies and the annual state-of-the-nation address. As Uganda’s elections approach, government agencies have a responsibility to uphold press freedom. The International Press Association of Uganda condemns this censorship. Freedom of the press is enshrined in the Constitution of Uganda, and the public has a right to information that is not directly controlled by the Ugandan authorities. Denying accredited journalists the right to access the basic workings of government encourages the spread of disinformation, which is especially dangerous in this election period. The Ugandan electorate should have access to reporting on government from a variety of legitimate media outlets, including Nation Media Group.
