In all these years I've never attended one of the defining tourist attractions of Venice: a performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. They pack out church venues several times a week, play the same music over & over for ever... Yesterday I paid up & went along - & enjoyed it

Lunch with canal views at my favourite restaurant in Venice, La Zucca. Amazing seasonal flavours in the lasagne with Chioggia radicchio, mushrooms and fontina cheese

A lovely & lucky Venice experience this morning: a free (optional donations) concert I'd seen advertised on a church door. The trio of musicians of the Ensemble Serenissimi filled the frescoed space of Ognissanti with beautiful strings. Small audience, but big applause.

Yesterday I visited the little museum of the Pietà church & institution, where parents left babies to be cared for. Heartrending little tokens & messages left by mothers. The Pietà was famous for its female musicians & for music director Antonio Vivaldi

Some highlights of Neoclassical Taste, the current exhibition at Ca'Rezzonico, Venice, of works from the album Leopoldo Cicognara compiled for his wife. A great palace-museum which has very interesting exhibitions - I get good value from my MUVE museum card here

Night reflections, Venice this evening. The rain stopped and it's a still night filled with atmosphere.

Due to regional elections (bizarre but true) the ferry services in Venice have been slashed for the last 3 days. Today people were left stranded on the Giudecca as the boat was too full - many complaints & arguments & one man said "Evviva l'Italia", with an eyeroll. Some laughter.

It's grey and drizzly in Venice today, so here's a photo from yesterday afternoon

Carlo Goldoni's La Vedova Scaltra at Teatro Toniolo, Mestre. Worth the journey to the mainland. A widow looking for love chooses between 4 national caricatures. Milord Runebif is the English candidate: a rich man of few words. The jealous Italian wins though. Good fun & historically fascinating

Sunday church bells across the water. The view of Venice from the Giudecca today.

I popped into Palazzo Fortuny for some peace and beauty after having to fight through horrible ill-mannered crowds in the San Marco area (I was only there to buy socks). Venice at its worse followed by Venice at its best

Casanova and Venice exhibition at Palazzo Cini. Not really about Casanova but about artistic Venice at the time, his milieu, the theatre and a world of 'otherness'. Works by artists including Canaletto & fascinating caricatures by Anton Maria Zanetti palazzocini.it

Today's one of the most important days of the year in Venice: the Festa della Salute, a thanksgiving for deliverance from plague. Includes candles & mass but also balloons and sweet treats

At the Teatro Goldoni in Venice last night for a concert by My Venice Orchestra: all women musicans, awareness-raising & fundraising for Venice council's campaign to prevent violence against women. A crowd-pleasing, varied programme from Salieri to Nino Rota.

The submarine Enrico Dandolo, named for Venice's blind warrior-doge, which you can tour as part of the Museo Storico Navale in Venice (at added cost, by booking). The tour passes through the military zone at the Arsenale, which is an added attraction

Lunchtime stop at the Osteria Alla Rampa: potato & mushroom tortino, polpetta di rapa, crostino w gorgonzola and asparagus, plus a little €1.50 glass of wine. Off to tour a submarine next. #Venice

Early morning shopping trip to the market garden stall at the women's prison in Venice: organic produce & zero food miles. Nearby a fisherman was sorting little crabs on the canalside, watched by a whote egret. I came home with fresh leafy greens, handcream & a myrrh-scented soap

Burano was gorgeous in the sunshine & Torcello atmospheric. But my highlight of the day was a long chat with a Burano resident who told me about her long life here & the island community. Learning languages and forging human connections can't be beaten ❤️
