So, many thanks to Diane Keaton; may she and her work be remembered with love. 💙

For Men and Music, I wrote this poem, “I’m into Pop Music,” as a tribute to Diane Keaton (and my other comfort/inspiration during that time, Carole King) because I admired Diane’s independence. It was a self reliance I aspired to; I think I found my path a bit easier because of the model she set.

I was soothed by Diane’s eccentric mix of humor and beauty, kookiness and intelligence. Though thought of as a woman who could not finish a sentence, she was actually clear-minded; her distinct style and three contemplative memoirs can attest to that. She had vision.

Diane’s movies were a comfort during this time; I played them over and over again—especially Something’s Gotta Give. When I think of her, I most often think of the remarkable, funny, and touching performance she gives in that movie.

I’m very sad to hear about Diane Keaton’s passing. She was such an inspiration to me, especially during my 20s. When I was writing my first book, Men and Music, I was living alone and single, really struggling with what I was supposed to do with my life.

New poem—wishing everyone lots of love this autumn. 🍎💙
A poem by Isaiah Vianese with the following text:

Apple

It’s autumn.
I’ve been so sad this year.

The sky greys.
The news turns red.

Like I said,
I love you to the end.

The album also launched another lucrative concert outing, winkingly called the Here We Go Again Tour. Cher was at the top of her game, and there was another big win to come later that year.

Dancing Queen was a major success: Rolling Stone named it one of the best albums that year, and it had the best week of sales for any female pop star in 2018--a major commercial win for a 72 year old artist.

The most interesting tunes, however, may be Cher's melancholic cuts, like her slowed down take on "One of Us." Her voice can be a great vehicle for heartache, and this stripped down version is a winning closer to the album because it confirms her skills as an evocative interpreter.

Her take on "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” is the kind of pulsing eurodance tune that has been her bread and butter since 1998; it's all glitter, cheekiness, and fun.

Continuing her 2018 winning streak, Cher released her ABBA album, Dancing Queen. Hearkening back to her early solo recordings, Cher is a master cover artist, taking beloved material and making it her own. She infuses the tunes with her own sense of camp and drama.
