And herewith my annual African in the North oh-hell-its-so-fucking-cold-now poem.

How with ease
You forget
In Summer’s warmth
Of Winter’s frozen
Bony fingers’
Squeeze with
Death’s own vice grip
How imperceptible
Becomes whisper thin
Gossamer between
Life and eternity.

From the start, 'Shamiso' roots itself in Zimbabwean life and culture. It's in the way children start fights by kicking little mounds of soil while taunting, “your mother’s breast”. It's in Brian Chikwava’s use of the pronoun “they” for elders, and in naming your dog “to fight with your neighbours”.

I've enjoyed this series! Particular favorites:

- Muthi Nhlema, Piss Corpse (very droll)
- Libby Young, The Smell of Rain (haunting me since I read it)
- Carmelo Rafalà, The Clarity of Ice (my kind of SF 🤩)

Also liked Zainab Omaki's The Last and Final Battle.
Has to be the the whole ZamaShort series, it has been a wild ride so far and every one has been most dear to me, I am honoured to have put forth works from all these amazing authors.
