Exodus by Peter F. Hamilton is one I haven’t seen mentioned yet! The sequel is coming out next year, too.

I see 'The Expanse' and 'A Memory Called Empire' are covered, so I will go with Emily Tesh's 'Some Desperate Glory'

Unless I missed it, I haven't seen James S A Corey's Expanse books (starting with Leviathan Wakes) recommended. Space opera at its finest across 9 thick volumes.

Seconding Arkady Martine & the Vorkosigan Saga by Bujold (so good). The Expanse (books) are terrific and have a great tv adaptation of the first 6 books. Banks ofc.
I did quite enjoy a lot about revelation space (series), though I have some gripes with it it is a really unique & interesting take.

(Bujold cont'd) either The Warrior's Apprentice or The Vor Game, feat. Miles Vorkosigan, physically disabled, clever, 2 tons of chaos in a 16-oz package. One of the most convincing "military tactical genius" characters ever. I plan to avoid any GALAXY he's in because of the damage blast radius. :)

Ah! With Weber, you probably want On Basilisk Station (Honor Harrington series) - milsf/space opera. For Bujold, you can either start with ~prequels Cordelia's Honor (Shards of Honor + Barrayar), which has intrigue, civil war, and plot-critical SHOPPING or... (more)

I also stan for "Blood Music" - I like both the story and the novel (which gets quantum mechanical in a delightfully bonkers way the story didn't have space for), but the novel involves the most poignant, heartbreaking, beautiful use of a can opener in fiction EVER.

AFAIK Green only writes male protagonists BUT every one of his FEMALE characters is a complete person with agency. My gateway drug was his fantasy Blue Moon Rising, which DOESN'T slut-shame Princess Julia. Everything I know about plotting, I learned from Blue Moon Rising. I have that book MEMORIZED.

- Simon R. Green's Deathstalker Saga. Unabashed over-the-top pulp with a heart, quietly & thoroughly inclusive (queer characters etc). A mild-mannered yet superpowered historian leads a rebellion against an Evil Empress. Turns out the work BEGINS after her downfall!

- Kate Elliott's Unconquerable Sun is gender-bent Alexander the Great IN SPAAAACE. Delicious epic stakes and thinky worldbuilding. I stan for The Wily Persephone forever.

(Trust me, if I am not discussing YOUR fave, either I couldn't chase it down in SOUTH KOREA or I ran out of Bluesky chars. :p)

Oh goodness! Decisions. :3 I'll pitch 3 completely different ones.

- Douglas Hill's Galactic Warlord - older kids' book & childhood fave, tight writing: the dying last survivor of a mercenary "race" seeks revenge on his people's destroyers. I get chills just thinking of the opening 3 decades later.
