I had this weird dream, where I just cut my veins really deeply with a blade, a torrent of blood shot out, and when I woke up, I felt strangely at ease, as if something stopped weighing down on me.
Chasing trends…
(”China and the geopolitics of rare earth”)
Roughly halfway done with the first season and watching this is so weird, because it's giving me that exact feeling of melancholia I used to feel as a teenager, and I thought I was incapable of feeling that any more.

That exact same feeling Dazai, Dostoevsky or Evangelion would give me.
Five episodes into this and IT’S LITERALLY JUST LEGALISTS VS MOHISTS????

I’m surprised. Genuinely. It’s a cheap reprint of an important book and it’s actually good? Has all of van Gulik’s notes and everything? Wow.
I like it when books aren’t afraid to give readers the important questions, no punches pulled.
How the HSK5 monkey looks at you when you've been slacking off with your anki deck
Everyone looks devilishly good even by anime standards. And I sorta feel guilty looking at it, as if I'm making some sort of transgression by indulging in something that's both so pretty yet so lowbrow in essence.
I guess I'm just way more Catholic than I give myself credit for.
I'm going to try to properly articulate this but reading this manga just feels wrong, mostly because of the art. The art is pretty. It's basically the artist taking the original designs of an idealized JRPG and then turning the dial up to 11.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Ayanami Raising Project
Submitted my thesis topic for the MA.
The professor I asked to supervise it accepted my request by just replying "okay." in an email and that was it.
”Yes, the number of births is declining, the market will respond by creating an environment and media landscape actively hostile to the remaining children.”
Reading this felt like getting punched in the gut honestly.
“Warrior spirit” is for when you can’t get enough thingamajigs out the factory and you have to tell your guys “sorry your country can’t give you the tools you need to succeed, make up for it with chutzpa!”

And in my reading the US was never that kinda country.
I’m not an American so I know it doesn’t matter but I don’t get the stress the US military places on “Warrior spirit” when I think it’d be better to hear as a soldier that “you serve in the army that developed a pizza MRE”, that is, a force that stresses material superiority.
Jumped out to the store to buy a lightbulb and I saw this on clearance for 4 bucks and I was like, why the fuck not?
Finished another thingamajig in Hungarian. Too bad the Chinese original wasn't exactly high art to begin with. But it's a fine way to get back in the saddle.
I feel like I'm very close to losing it by including this in the list of sources
“To my younger brother, Sándor, as a “parting gift” – but with the hope that he soon visits the “accursed“ house at Szeghalom. 1921.05.20.❤️”
If I had a cent for each time someone tried to give me a Lin Yutang novel for free this week, I’d have two cents. Which is not a lot but it strange that it happened twice.
In a sudden upset they‘ve decided to approve my application for a social stipend.
A “pitiful sum” (as if I had the right to denigrate an alm…) but coupled with the academic stipend it’s enough to “pull my own weight” at home and not bother anyone.
必勝!
Interestingly enough the article collection had a newspaper clipping in it from the 70s, containing a review of the book titled "Soviet Article Collection about the Years of Maoist Upheaval" in Magyar Nemzet. (Or at least I assume it's Magyar Nemzet, based on the font.)
