I was fortunate to screen REDS a couple of years ago at Alamo Drafthouse and I was startled by how many people had never seen it before. That incredible chemistry between Keaton, Beatty and Nicholson absolutely knocked them out — Keaton, in particular.

My heart aches for what you went through. I know far too many people who convinced themselves they could “change” if they just got married and had kids and “played it straight.” Some of them are still living that lie. Many are miserable but can’t stop pretending.

If it had been Sean Connery or Steve McQueen or even Dustin Hoffman, my Dad would probably have recognized him. But he had never seen a single Nicholson movie until TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. I do recall he really wanted to see REDS, but I guess he never got around to it!

Absolutely true. And this was a big Thanksgiving/Christmas release, too. These days, it would go straight to streaming — if it got produced at all.

It’s even more obvious if you see it on the big screen! I hosted a screening of the 4K restoration a few years ago, and everyone laughed when he showed up: a “teenager” who looks like he’s old enough to run for President!

Hilariously, his reaction was kind of, “Well, who knew? He never mentioned it!” My Dad was in marketing for decades, and worked with lots of celebrities, so he was the last guy to be starstruck!

As I recall, history and sports and just the world in general. They were the same age, so they probably had a few things in common. I’m sure Jack was delighted not to have to discuss his career for four hours; my Dad certainly knew nothing about it!

Thank you! He couldn’t even remember Nicholson’s name! He started describing him and I put on a tape of TERMS, and he said, “Yeah, that’s the guy!” My Mom and I couldn’t stop laughing: Somehow, he had never seen a Jack Nicholson movie. But they apparently hit it off!

I wish you could have been at the sneak preview: People screamed with laughter — absolutely hysterical. You couldn’t hear the dialogue for a couple of minutes!
