Thought I hadn't screenshot these before Brian Sibley left the other place. But <phew> I had. Time to blow my own trumpet for once.
Brian Sibley: "Just read Waterbound, @JaneVSW's excellent futuristic novel championing the demand for difficult and dangerous questions to be asked and calling for its characters (and reader) to have the courage to challenge unacceptable prejudices. Terrific, memorable story for teens & up." Above a cover image of Waterbound / Jane Stemp, strapline "Secrets hidden where the river runs," picture showing a folded red lily floating on dark water. Brian Sibley: "An exceptional book written for teen readers but able to reach and touch any adult reader with imagination and even a grain of social conscience. A believable futuristic novel, strongly plotted, with contemporary, nuanced characters and a defiant challenge to human prejudices."

Eek. Well, take care, and I hope things continue to improve.

It's funny the different reactions to stuff. I was on max co-codamol 4x daily when I had a leg ulcer, and it deadened the pain, but that was all.

My first thought was "Charles Keeping!" too!

Further on flapjacks as oat bars, I found this recipe for "Scotch Seas"(?) in a booklet called Round the World Cookbook, ed. K Morrow &c. Reading, Pa.: Culinary Arts Press, 1936.
1 cup brown sugar, ½ cup butter or other shortening, melted, 2 cups rolled oats, 1 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt. Add sugar to melted butter & stir until sugar dissolved. Add remaining ingredients & mix well. Pour into a well-greased shallow pan & bake in moderate oven (350°F) for 30 minutes. When cool cut into squares.

After one of my mum's attempts failed, they became known as "cement cakes" in our family.

I recommend The Girls of St Bride's for an unusually nuanced (especially at that date) portrayal of a wheelchair-using character at the school, Winifred.

I think I've heard – though I'm not sure I believe it – that they were hinged, so one learnt the art of hitching them up gracefully into the small of one's back as one sat down. The perils of being sufficiently high in the social scale to follow fashion .... !

Lovely! I used to commute home along Stokes Bay and the sunsets were often wonderful.

That's ... unprintable. So sorry xx

Update: much to my disgruntlement, we the (unpaid) authors would have to *pay* the journal publishers what my co-author describes as a "not-trivial amount" for open access.
😡
I'll wait to see what transpires by way of author copies ...
janevsw.bsky.social
Sincerely hoping they will let co-author and me keep it open access! Otherwise it's samizdat here we come ...

Publication pending – co-author & I heave a sigh of relief.

"Congratulations on the acceptance of your paper 'Hospital Ships of the Royal Navy in World War One: From Pre-war Planning to the Aftermath of Jutland'."
In the International Journal of Military History – some time soon.
