I will back up Sam in saying that since I've been quietly following this discussion, several very questionable and slanderous comments have been deleted from under the main post to which Sam is responding. Some were latching onto insinuations in the main post, others took ugly turns of their own.

And now for something completely different: the Text Object Research Network at the Radboud Institute for Culture and History had its first date with a manuscript of the academic year. I found myself reading a 17th c. letter by famous Dutch historian/poet/playwright P.C. Hooft. Not my usual fare!

Can highly recommend this volume as a holiday gift --as an added bonus you can even read my article within it about the judicial experiences of vulnerable groups in the Carolingian empire.

Zeker geen verkeerd spul! Und kein Problem! Wenn es um Garum geht, bin ich immer begeistert!
janvandoren.bsky.social
Pliny the Elder's Natural Histories (Book 32, c. 94) mentions the best garum is made from scombers in Carthago Spartaria (Cartagena, Spain) and that these are also caught in Baetica. According to Robert Curtis (Garum and Salsamenta, p. 2, n. 3), Galen ranked Baetica's mackerel garum second best.

No worries! I am a slow poster!

We serendipitously linked to the same Smithsonian article! I'm not too bothered about it being Spanish rather than Italian: garum/liquamen was produced all across the coastal regions of the Roman Empire, especially Spain, Italy, Greece, Tunis, and even the British Isles and Belgium/the Netherlands.

Flor de Garum is supposedly based on the so-called Gargilius Martialis garum recipe (more likely an early medieval attribution, which has a high salt content, but also contains lots of spices/flavorings), so I would recommend it on that basis. See: www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture...
