PEACEMAKER S2 is uneven and meanders more than it needs to reach eight episodes. But the finale's emotional peaks are equal to the best in Gunn's career; here, Cena et al. elevate to new euphoric heights. I sobbed despite the mess. Solid A.

For DoomRocket, @arpadokay.bsky.social returns to talk up Linus Liu's CAT MASK BOY, a YA OGN from Nakama Press that features plenty of nods to KAMEN RIDER -- and, surprisingly, shades of LA HAINE. Latest REQUIRED READING ready for your eyes: doomrocket.substack.com/p/a-top-shel...
A top-shelf blend of influences makes magic in Cat Mask Boy
Linus Liu's graphic novel shows how kids get along in an imperfect world.

My first dispatch from Screamfest (which kicks off its annual rampage through LA tonight), reviews Ehrland Hollingsworth’s DOOBA DOOBA (best of the fest so far), Dawid Torrone’s DEAD BY DAWN, Martijn Smits’ MEAT KILLS, and Kika Magalhães' short, DEVIL'S PRISM doomrocket.substack.com/p/screamfest...

A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE: I can't think of another director better suited to tap into the same nervy energy as Tony Scott's CRIMSON TIDE, but Kathryn Bigelow's tension-riddled return to fiction ends up being a didactic, Netflix-produced dud.

Kathryn Bigelow Ponders America At DEFCON 1 In A House of Dynamite
Kathryn Bigelow's anxious thriller A House of Dynamite provides apocalyptic dread, but little in the way of genuine thrills or pathos.

I’m reading Chaykin’s CITY OF TOMORROW and I cannot get past how much this guy looks like Benny Safdie.

V/H/S/Halloween, like most entries in the long-running anthology series, plays like a horror mixtape: amusing B-sides interspersed with euphoric hits. I had a pretty damn good time with it.

Gnarly horror anthology V/H/S/Halloween hits like a sugar rush
The latest entry in Shudder's bite-sized horror franchise, V/H/S/Halloween has enough standouts to be more treat than trick.

I had no TV restrictions, and if you know me at all, I hope that piece of information helps explain a few things about my whole deal.

This week's PEACEMAKER is easily the best of the season so far, thrilling and terrifying and executed brilliantly. (Also, that cameo made me fall out of my seat.)

Also, it's insane that Pilou Asbæk basically got to play the book version of Euron Greyjoy in this.

I skipped AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM when it came out, and I still don’t regret that. But taken passively (background noise as I work), it’s not without its charms —like if Schumacher had directed the Star Wars prequels and brought his Batman energy to the assignment. Not terrible! boxd.it/baRFbt
A ★★★ review of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
As it happens, the perfect background movie: overlong and visually bananas enough to pull me away from my busy work for brief pockets to zone out to its vivid cartoon noise. Honestly, if you have the ...

And now a Disney+ miniseries.

If you told me this was premiering exclusively on Disney+, I would believe you. There’s very little here that suggests this is even a movie.
