Not a bad way to end the day you got laid off!

Well, just found I'm getting laid off effective tomorrow. Trying to take some comfort from one of my favorite related quotes:

Mr. Spock: "Change is the essential process of all existence."

I'd much rather be working on the new "building new stuff in software to help someone out and we're both excited about it" project than the "normalize 28,000 rows of excel data to prep it for import" project.

In other news, the sky is still blue!

@wilwheaton.net Michigan Trek guy here. Grocery shopping with my wife after hearing about the shooting in Grand Blanc, and we ran into someone wearing an Ernest Borg9 shirt. We had a great chat with them. Just wanted to say thanks for giving us a much needed break from today's news.

Here in the Lansing area, the storm that just rolled through dropped the temp by almost 20F

Decent results kayak fishing on Lake Lansing today. Fished from 7 AM - 11 AM to avoid the worst of the heat.

@gizmodo.com Could whoever controls the AI that posts your deal items update settings so all these "It's nearly free!" BS posts stop? I don't mind the deal posts themselves, just the constant "they're almost giving them away!" crap, when that is definitely not the case.

I'm pleased to report the Lake Lansing Pelican is real.

Important weather geek FYI: If you live in the at risk areas here DO NOT IGNORE this type of warning. NOAA hasn't issued one of these since 2012, and that system created 83 tornadoes.

"Have an appointment at least every six months so we keep your prescriptions current." Ok, I had one within the last six months. "Oh, well we wrote your script a year ago, and it's been a year so you need to come in again."

WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE SIX MONTH REQUIREMENT

Meshtastic nodes in Michigan received over the last three days, mostly via MQTT relays. Over a dozen local nodes without using relays. The full node list (including those that don't include location info) is twice the size. Fun watching it grow!

For the first time ever, across more streaming devices than I can count, the super annoying app launcing shortcut buttons on a remote are all for services I actually use. This feels impossible.

Having a lot of fun with Meshtastic. Got started with a $35 kit from amazon (Heltec v3 with N30 case). No soldering needed. Just snap it together and off you go.

Had fun at the Lansing area GMRS meetup today. Great to meet other radio geeks in person instead of only on the air. Also won a "new" handheld in the raffle!

One would hope that people might stop using face unlock on their phones given how prevalent depictions of it being used against people now are in media, but then again one is a 20+ year IT guy who knows better than to hope in that way.

In a "totally not distracting myself from the world in general today" sort of way, I'm building a model for Star Trek ship model riser stands. Eventual goal is to make models for different heights and create a tiered display to save shelf space.
