Just FYI, I don't follow many people. I add them to lists I've created. That gives me a chance to dip in & out & see posts from people I might miss if I follow a gazillion people because I only check social media maybe 30 minutes a day, if that.
As I've mentioned before, I don't follow people. I've created lists and I add folks to those lists which lets me filter based on topic (i.e., 'Authors' or 'Crafts').

1) For anyone who's curious: the first time CoPilot popped up when I was using MS-Word, I went to Settings and uninstalled it. That was a month or two ago (or longer). So far, no problems. Just FYI.

Every year this happens somewhere not far from me and every year it's a blast. I have volunteered in a couple of the towns and have handed out water, manned a booth, or just came out to cheer folks on. Rain or shine, hot or cold -- RAGBRAI will happen.

One of the perils of being a writer is you get asked to do writerly things, like write the speech for the funeral of a dear friend. Which I did and presented today.

Since June, six people I was close to have died. I really hope we're done with this for a few months, at least.

Unlike so many folks, I love this time of year. Dark at 5:00PM? Okay, that works for me. Dark at 6AM? That works, too. Cold, windy, rainy, snowy? I'll add another layer of clothing. I get more done in Nov-March than any other time of the year. There's something to be said for hibernation.

I think "A Night in the Lonesome October" by Zelazny & read by Zelazny is perhaps the perfect audiobook. I either read or listen to it every October and I am still discovering characters. I mean, Virginia Woolf? Yep, she's there.

Fallen Books and Other Subtle Clues in Zelazny’s “A Night in the Lonesome October”, by Dr. Christopher S. Kovacs
An essay by Dr. Christopher S. Kovacs.  About the essay, in his own words: Part of the enjoyment of A Night in the Lonesome October comes from recognizing obvious characters and puzzling over the i…

I am reading some YA books (thanks to @rickriordan.bsky.social). When I was a kid, I kind of skipped over YA and went straight to adult mysteries and other fiction. My mother evaluated books for the library so I read what she brought home by the time I was in 5th grade or so.

I often read social media posts (especially here) and I feel like the Clever Kids are making comments and I'm out of the loop. Okay, I'm old (70s), so I get it, but I don't encounter it as much anywhere else. I think ...

I enjoy seeing mentions of articles that folks post, but inevitably when I follow the link I'm asked to subscribe. I understand that these sites need $$ to stay in business, but I'm limited in how much I can spend on online sites.

If you post links, please, if possible, make it a gift link.

I spent a few days brainstorming books with friends; as always, I learned a lot about the characters in my WIP and had a great time. It's such an interesting experience to get away, unhook from social media, and just be real for a time.

@scalzi.com Welcome to Flyover Land! I wish I could attend your event tomorrow but I'm leading a workshop on writing and won't get back in time. Enjoy IC; hope you're staying at the Graduate which is one of the more interesting hotels in the area.

I would like to thank Jules Verne and Jude Devereaux for making my preparation for a colonoscopy bearable. I realize that this is not a goal that many authors aspire to, but nonetheless, there it is. Thank you.

1) Regarding the whole Anthropic mess: 10 of my books are in the LibGen database but apparently weren't used by Anthropic (because Ant downloaded files before 2021 and presumably those 10 books were added to LibGen after 2021).

I begin my annual ritual of reading A Night in the Lonesome October, one chapter a day. It’s one of my favorites.

The recent Rapture alert sent me down a big black hole to Places I've Never Been Before. There are Facebook groups, Reddit lists, and bunches of sites where people discuss this in great detail.

I remember the movie "They Live". I realize that yes, they are among us.

It seems like every day I dip into this social media stream and I find things I have *never* heard of before. I am in my 7th decade, have multiple advanced degrees, was in the high tech field, have lived in different countries & states, and none of that has exposed me to such variety as I see here.

This is good -- simple, concise, and straightforward. Lots to think about.

I've discovered a new test for myself whenever I read about government actions. I ask myself: Would I be upset if it was Obama who did that? If it was Biden or Reagan or Bush?

If the answer is 'yes', then I think my fear/worry/anger is justified. Otherwise, I'm just reacting to You-Know-Who.

Every month I mention the books that released in the month (book birthdays).

This month has Gilt, which is my 'haunted by dead firefighter husband' novel of second chances in life and love. I had fun penning those scenes where she sees the ghost but nobody else does.

Maybe it's a sign of my own cynicism but the 1st thing I thought when I heard about a right-wing speaker's death was "Someone in the current administration is behind it to stir up anger against the so-called 'woke' world and divert attention from the President's health."

We'll never know, will we?

I have been involved in a lawsuit in the past (long story involving a house sale). I am wary of any legal antics because I remember how we had to jump through MANY hoops and pay lots of money to get the mess settled after months & months of churn.

I stumbled across a printed version of this very short story while weeding out. I still think it's one of the best stories I've read.

I just spent the morning going through The Box of Memories I've hauled for the 18 moves I've made in 50 years (yes, I counted; those are adult moves; I didn't count college). I have pared it down to a small box now by pitching out old scrapbooks, photos & albums, & Stuff.
